Aging and health in Brazilian journals (2000-2009)

ABSTRACT

Given the rapid and steady increase in the elderly population in Brazil and worldwide, our aim was to understand the discursive practices and meanings produced about the binomial aging-health in journals of the Virtual Health Library in the period 2000 to 2009, under the theoretical perspective of social constructionism. The selection of the material was made by means of descriptors, titles and abstracts, and analytical categories constructed from selected items. We concluded that the subject has been increasingly studied. Negative and positive directions, related to the elderly and aging, remain. Nevertheless, the elderly may have an active old age, healthy and quality of life.
