Open-access Between stigma and health: itineraries of prostate cancer patients

ABSTRACT

Men’s health has been influenced over time by complex networks of cultural and social norms that define the concept of masculinity. This article aimed to analyze the influence of representations of masculinity on men’s health, with an emphasis on the implications for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of prostate cancer. The social construction of masculinity is explored, highlighting how the roles assigned to men shape attitudes towards health. This research is part of a study carried out during the academic master’s degree, which outlined the therapeutic itineraries of patients with prostate cancer at the University Hospital of Brasília, in order to identify the repercussions of the pandemic. This is qualitative research based on the therapeutic itinerary method. The study included the participation of 15 adult men diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the results highlighted the influence of the construction of masculinity in the search for treatment. Participants were hesitant to seek immediate medical assistance due to concerns about appearing vulnerable. Furthermore, the main understanding among participants was related to the concern of leaving the family unprotected, highlighting how traditional gender expectations still influence society.
