Sexual and reproductive health of women affected by conjugal violence

ABSTRACT

Spouse-related violence is a public health issue and a serious violation of human rights, restricting women’s freedom of decision-making, their ability to experience sexuality in a healthy way and reproduction. In this sense, this study aimed to explore the sexual and reproductive health of women experiencing domestic violence assisted by the Special Operation Maria da Penha Patrol, in the Subúrbio Ferroviário Health District of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. To this end, an exploratory study with a qualitative approach was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 17 participants, between December 2020 and July 2021. The analytical process resulted in the following categories: Contraception at the center of sexual and reproductive health care; Limited access to health services due to the spouse; Exposure to unwanted pregnancy and unsafe sex; Termination of pregnancy in situations of domestic violence. The findings indicate that the women experienced severe violations of their sexual and reproductive rights, with significantly limited autonomy. Negative health impacts were observed across multiple dimensions. In light of the effects of domestic violence, intersectoral strategies and comprehensive health care are essential to address the repercussions on the lives of these women and their families.
