Tobacco growers zone of rural Pelotas (RS), Brazil: exposure and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

The objective of this study was to identify the awareness of tobacco growers as to their exposure to occupational risks and the use of PPE during their work activities. This exploratory descriptive study was based on a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with growers from the municipality of Pelotas (RS). The content analysis revealed that workers have a superficial knowledge of the health problems to which they are exposed in their work environment. Furthermore, PPE is not accepted by growers, who make use of only some of the equipment, as it is considered uncomfortable. This is still all related to lack of training. In conclusion, there is a requirement for educational work to be developed in the tobacco farms.
