Why do patients not adhere to treatment? Methods for health education

This work is a theoretical essay aiming to develop a systematic reflection on the adherence to treatment by the Unified Health System (SUS) users. It discusses the concept of adherence grounded on the historicity of the SUS as legitimizer of actions related to the users' autonomy. Paulo Freire's Method, the Broadened Clinic and the Motivational Interview are articulated as methodological devices that emphasize the role of health education professionals towards change and self-care. The problem of adhesion questions the working team about its role in the educational context, which requires listening to the demands that are interposed to the everyday praxis.
