Wide steps: peripheral girls towards university and its psychosocial dilemmas

Abstract

The sexual division of labor is still a discriminatory mark in Brazilian society, leaving women with precarious and less valued works. In reflecting on gender and education, this article identified the contributions of the “Meninas velozes”, a interdisciplinary project of extension and research, in facing this scenario from the strengthening of learning and psychosocial dimensions. This project is led by professors and researchers from engineering, social sciences and humanities of Universidade de Brasília (UnB) and Université Paris 13 (France). Its actions have been taking place in public school on the outskirts of the Federal District since 2013 and has reached more than 100 girls in these 6 years. Questionnaires were applied to collect socioeconomic data and semi-structured interviews with 16 students from UnB, former project participants. Their reports highlighted situations that threaten their permanence and integration in the university and weaken mental health, such as bullying, material restrictions and personal conflicts.
