Estudos de Comunidade e ciências sociais no Brasil

The purpose of this article is to examine the literature about Community Studies(CS) in Brazil, highlighting their intellectual context of production and the debates evoked by them, especially between the 1940's and 1960's. As a research method arising from Anthropology on communities in social change process, CS was used in United States between 1920's and 1950's, and played a fundamental role in the institutionalization of Social Sciences in Brazil. Three aspects are highlighted on CS production: first, in a conceptual approach, we discuss their definitions, origins and relation to main topics in the 1950's. The second aspect is related to the role of CS in the history of Social Sciences, especially their institutionalization process. By the end, we revisit the debates between social scientists about the sociological work standard to be developed at that time.
