Trans people’s health conditions and strategies of access to health services in the city of Rio de Janeiro and its Metropolitan Area

Abstract

This article aims to discuss strategies and conditions of access to health care for transgender people based on information collected by a survey conducted between 2016 and 2017, which consisted of applying a questionnaire to 391 transgender people living in Rio de Janeiro city and Metropolitan Area. We discuss the following dimensions: strategies for access to information and care in transgender health; processes of gender affirmation and non-invasive body modifications and surgical procedures; access to and use of hormones; and mental health. The data collected point to the precariousness of access to health care and the importance of health services seeking to effectively accommodate the enormous unmet demand of this population for such care, without blaming them for often remaining outside such services.
