School heteronormativity in Mexico: Reflections on homosexuality surveillance and punishment in school

Abstract

This paper is a theoretical discussion that explores the problem of school violence in Mexico for reasons of gender identity, expression & sexual orientation. The arguments mobilize gender studies and sexual diversity categories to understand the situation of homosexual students at school. The analysis conceives the school as an institution that teaches, disciplines and normalizes the construction of students according to heteronormativity guidelines through a variety pedagogical methods to monitor compliance. Reflection emphasizes the need to transform traditional educational practices that reproduce and support violence against homosexuality; advocating for the construction of an equitable society respectful of the human rights.
