Sexual and reproductive health, religious conservatism, and access to medicines: a discussion on the global advocacy strategy of the International Consortium for Emergency Contraception

Abstract

The International Consortium for Emergency Contraception is a non-governmental organization, created in 1996 by initiative of the Rockefeller Foundation initiative. ICEC has been the main international voice advocating for the access to emergency contraception (EC) and its dissemination in so-called developing countries. Its website is an important source of information and a vehicle for EC advocacy. A thematic analysis was performed on selected ICEC website documents available during the 2013-2014 period. This article questions whether the lack of a broad discussion on sexuality and human rights that results from this assessment responds to a political scenario of intensified religious fundamentalism.
