Detection of Cucumber mosaic virus in imported Phalaenopsis species

ABSTRACT

In Brazil, orchid seedlings are imported from several countries, such as: Holland, Taiwan, Thailand, and are subject to phytosanitary inspections. This study aimed to evaluate the phytosanitary quality, considering viruses from imported and domestic orchid seedlings, through immunochromatographic test and RT-PCR. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was detected in imported orchid samples as single or mixed infection. Although CMV is not a Brazilian quarantine virus and no virus in this plant category was detected, the examined samples evidenced the need to strengthen a national virus-indexing program, preventing the introduction of foreign viruses via imported orchids, in order to mitigate the risks of inoculum sources and introduction of potential new variants of these viruses, which can spread and impair Brazilian agribusiness.
