Nursing care for chronic patients: novice nurses' conceptions

The purpose of this article is to investigate novice nurses' theoretical and practical knowledge concerning care for patients with chronic conditions. This exploratory study interviewed 31 nurses who graduated between 2000 and 2006. The data analysis was conducted using the Collective Subject Speech Method, using the software Atlas Ti. Four central ideas were identified: the role of nurses in patient care; care strategies; specific nursing education in order to care for patients in chronic conditions; and learning acquired through nursing school education regarding chronic conditions. Nursing theoretical and practical knowledge concerning chronic conditions does not reveal in its entirety the professional nurse profile as established by Brazilian National Curriculum Directives.
