This study showed the mediating tools that families use at home to care for their neonates who were discharged from intensive care unit, with the objective to describe how the mediating tools were internalized and incorporated to caring by caregivers. A qualitative approach was developed through a creativity and sensitivity method of research by the group dynamic called body-knowledge. The scenery was the homes of families undergoing the UFRJ Extended Activity: "Baby's health starts at home", in Rio de Janeiro city. The subjects were five families, nine student nurses and three registered nurses who were involved in the Project. It concluded that the management of small neonate's body was a challenge to family caregiver, because of special care and medication requirements and daily care. Then, it was necessary to internalize and incorporate tools that belong to the hospital (e.g. gauze, cotton, syringe, medication) in the home setting (e.g. basin; small glasses).
