Claiming freedom: women in search of freedom in American slave societies (18 th and 19 th centuries)

Abstract:

This dossier gathers reflections on how African-descendant women have built projects of autonomy - for themselves and other people -, how they conceived freedom and faced the various challenges on their paths to emancipation. It is also interested in fostering critical approaches on the circulation of patterns of race and gender in slave societies in the context of abolition, considering the role played by black and white women in such context.
