Literate culture, orality and gender in Portuguese convents (Seventeenth and eighteenth centuries)

This article is concerned with formats and uses of writing in female and male monasteries, in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Portugal. It explores the particular meanings of literacy. In order to do this, it attempts to adapt methodological suggestions from studies on the implications of the introduction of literacy, and its links with the universe of orality in different societies, to the specificities of the historical setting that it analyzes.
