O Campeão Brazileiro: press, constitutional unity and masonry sociability at the Bahia province (1830-1831)

Abstract:

This article examines the journal entitled O Campeão Brazileiro (The Brazilian Champion), printed in Bahia between 1830 and 1831, inserting it in the political and intellectual context that produced it. Based on its two first samples, it was possible to identify the anonymous copywriter, Bernardo José da Gama, a character who was connected to the national masonic lodges and of great influence in the First Empire (1822-1831). He made it a vehicle in defense ofconstitutional unity and union between the provinces of Brazil when the Imperial Order showed signs of political exhaustion.
