About the prohibition of women’s football: the operation of the Sports National Council and the sportive interdiction of women in Brazil (1941-1957)

Abstract:

The paper aims to contribute to the debate about the mechanisms for the realization of the prohibition on women practice of different kinds of sports, notably the football, in Brazil, between 1941 and 1979. Starting from a dialogue with the bibliography about the subject and including historical sources from official records and from media press, the paper advance in the understanding of how the National Sports Council (Conselho Nacional de Desportos) works the interdiction and how it mobilizes theories about the distinction between the genders, what implied the regulation of a list of sports forbidden to the women in 1941. Finally, through an episode that took place between 1956 and 1957, shows how, after 15 years, new women experiences on football were, once again, interrupted based in the same conceptions about a certain women nature.
