Open-access Monumento às Bandeiras: construction process and symbolic non-meaning

This article is dedicated to the campaign for the construction of the Monumento às Bandeiras, in 1936, and the resignification process that this monument has undergone in the last twenty years. To this end, we present the principles that guided the Bandeira Movement and the structuring of the Revista S. Paulo (1936). In this study, we assess how the “Bandeirante myth” permeated the statements in favor of the construction of the monument that, for supporters of the Bandeira Movement, would consecrate itself as a place of memory for Brazilians, but especially for Paulistas. Finally, we examine how some studies have highlighted the symbolic reframing of the Monumento às Bandeiras and the possibilities open to places of memory.
