Brazil in the “intellectual homeland” of José Enrique Rodó: expanding the Americanist perimeter

Abstract:

The article aims to analyze a group of texts and speeches by the Uruguayan thinker José Enrique Rodó (1871-1917) about Brazil, produced in the first two decades of the 20th century. Due to the little specific analytical production on this debate in the author’s work, we will approach the theme from Rodó’s utopia that deals with the construction of the “intellectual homeland”. This mobilized us to rehabilitate the old question about the belonging of the country to the concert of Latin American nations, based on Rodó’s interpretation, who also shifted his gaze to specific societal contexts in the continent. The focused texts demonstrate the author’s commitment to Americanism, understood as a fundamental cognitive tool for understanding the Latin American continent, which rescues elements from the historical past to produce an intellectual, spiritual and cooperative version of the continent.
