Written for volume two of the Diccionario político y social del mundo iberoamericano, edited by Fernández Sebastián (2011), this article follows the so-called history of concepts by Koselleck and his collaborators in order to examine the concept of order in Portugal, from the conception inherited from the society of the ancient regime, through the vicissitudes of nineteenth-century liberalism, to the first signs of socialist ideas.
