Intellectuals against the State: the defense of free initiative in the Jornal dos Economistas at the end of the 19th century

Abstract

The present article analyses the writings of intellectuals linked to the Jornal dos Economistas, a bi-weekly newspaper published in the Brazilian imperial capital from 1882-1883 and from 1887-1889. Our focus here concerns the debates on state intervention in the economic system, highlighting the social limits of ideas regarding Brazilian modernization.
