Mariátegui, González Prada and radical indigenism in Peru of the 1920s

Abstract:

The work of Peruvian José Carlos Mariátegui is known for dealing with Latin American themes, more specifically Peruvians as from Marxism in a creative way. The originality of his work is generally associated with regional issues, but based on European references and authors. When we enter the context of the Peruvian social movements of the 1920s, particularly in the peasant and indigenous movement, it is possible to see that the Peruvian author’s concern is linked to the need to respond to the demands of a specific political struggle. The article aims to present the radical movements that existed immediately before the emergence of Marxism in Peru and to discuss these influences in the work of José Carlos Mariátegui.
