From the loyalty to Philip IV to the historic subordination under the French monarchy: the work of Francesc Martí i Viladamor

Abstract:

This article analyses the evolution of the historical political discourse in the work of Francesc Martí i Viladamor (1616-1687/89). We analyzed four of his texts written between 1640 and 1646 in the context of the Catalan Revolt, the dynastic switch and also in the French-Spanish War context. This analysis will be carried out based on those four works, published in 1640, 1643, 1644 and 1646. They will be analyzed based on the history of ideas and concepts and around key political concepts of the Ancient Regime, such as obedience, loyalty, tyranny and elective monarchy. In order to achieve those turns in his political discourse, he employs in a skilled way the political concepts we mentioned before.
