1962: a year of multiple voices and bodies in Algerian spaces

Abstract:

In 2022, Algeria celebrated its 60th anniversary of independence after a long and violent French colonisation that began in 1830. Malika Rahal fills a gap in the historiography of the colonial war in Algeria. She focuses on the more intimate narratives of individual trajectories and of the people as a collective body, on the little-known experiences of the concentration camps, the refugees, the search for the disappeared and the independence celebrations. The researcher proposes approaches with sensitive themes to understand how 1962 is a year that reveals the problems experienced by the population in a country in the process of becoming. The research is based on everyday life in tumultuous times and on a rich visual and sound corpus that leads us to look at the multiple events of the long Algerian 62, full of layers and meanings. The book is divided into 22 chapters and four themes: Violence, Bodies, Spaces and Times.
