“Source” [Quelle] and “method” [Methode] in the didactic historiography in german language (1699-1904)

Abstract:

This paper regard the meaning of the words source [Quelle] and method [Methode], such as they are expressed in the prefaces and introductory remarks of the history textbooks published in the German language between 1699 and 1904. We enunciate the function changes of these words in their isolated (method / source) and conjugated (sources method) employ. Thereby, we intend to demonstrate that the main renovation in the history teaching methods in German language countries - namely, the use of historical criticism - announced in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, was rather one more speech of American historian than a German practice of transposition of a Science of History method into the History as school subject.
