Metadata elements for the cataloguing of graffiti

Abstract:

The concern with the preservation and sharing of knowledge records for future generations was not institutionalized and, over time, cultural heritage institutions, such as libraries, archives, and museums are committed to the preservation, storage, access, and exhibition of documentary collections, works of art and the natural world. Nowadays, graffiti - forms of symbolic manifestations, which can be stored and preserved, are evident. In this context, the following question arises: how can graffiti, as a manifestation of ephemeral art, have secured access? As a general objective, it is proposed to discuss elements of metadata for the cataloging of graffiti, considering issues of the context of creation, production, dissemination, and access. With a qualitative and applied approach, the study seeks exploratory objectives and makes use of bibliographic and documentary procedures. As a result, a list of metadata elements was elaborated that considers the VRA Core 4.0 data structure pattern and four new elements that weave the contextual approach sought: “cultural citation”, “timeline citation”, “ideological citation” and “intentionality”. Access to graffiti as cultural heritage is guaranteed by its conversion into a digital resource, which favors ubiquitous access to information related to urban artworks.
