THE RESPONSIVE/RESPONSIBLE ACT IN THE ENGLISH DISCURSIVE APPROPRIATION PROCESS IN FACE OF HUMOUR CONVEYED BY THE SITCOM FRIENDS

ABSTRACT

The interaction with humour elements from a second or foreign language (SL/FL) often challenges our comprehension and way to respond to them. By thinking on this, we carried out research on how twelve undergraduates from Letras-Inglês of a public university responded to humour conveyed by the situation comedy Friends and what their responsiveness concerning it revealed about their discursive appropriation process of English. As we were aware of the fact their responsive acts were coloured by evaluative stances, we realized that their responsiveness, also responsible towards the other from the dialogical interactions, might have contributed both to the increase of their English discursive appropriation and to their development as discourse subjects of/in this second language. Similarly, we argue about the importance of dialoguing with Friends to broaden their linguistic and cultural repertoires in the target language as well as to widen their comprehension and response to humour conveyed by it.
