The historical formation of the film analysis method in Jean-Claude Bernardet

ABSTRACT

The aim of the article is to investigate the historical formation of the method of film analysis in Jean-Claude Bernardet based on two fundamental books that make up a corpus written over 20 years: Brasil em tempo de cinema (1967) and Trajetória crítica (1978). Here we start from the hypothesis that the close reading of these books allows us to understand the formation of the critical method in Bernardet, which passes from the author analysis to the paradigm of conscientization until reaching the post-structuralist ambition of an examination of how class struggles operate in the form filmic. We will argue that this movement should not be seen as a mere escape forward, but as a reflexive overcoming. To understand it, we make use of some postulates of dialectics, such as those proposed by the materialist tradition. Thus, it was necessary to relate the internal analysis of the texts to the social totality, in which, by the way, we follow our author.
