The praga periodiqueira: press freedom, writing protocols, and political action at the time of Brazil’s Independence

ABSTRACT

The paper analyzes several pamphlets produced in the context of the Luso-Brazilian constitutionalist movement, whose main theme was the network of controversies formed around the so-called praga periodiqueira (periodical plague). The expression referred to the remarkable proliferation of political publications that took place during the Independence process. The approach emphasizes the different views regarding issues such as freedom and limits of the press, public role of editors, writing protocols and political mobilization. It highlights the meanings about the emergence of a set of discursive formulas that became references of public writing and of political debate throughout the XIX century in Brazil and Portugal.
