De verdugos a matones y patotas. Representaciones de la represión ilegal en HUM® y Pasquim durante la distensión de las dictaduras militares de Argentina y Brasil

ABSTRACT

This article presents a comparison of the cartoon representations of State terrorism published by the Brazilian newspaper O Pasquim (1969-1991) and the Argentinian magazine HUM® (1978-1999) during the distension of the military dictatorships. In these contexts, the cartoonists gradually abandoned metaphors and camouflage strategies to become more literal and direct when representing the political and clandestine violence perpetrated by the State, with the intention to put into words and images the dimensions of massacres and terror. We believe that the analysis of these transformations, the scopes and limits in the process of naming the unnameable will allow probing the threshold of tolerance and social sensitivity related to the most sinister and traumatic aspects of the dictatorships: the State’s illegal violence, and the violation of Human Rights.
