ABSTRACT:
In the 19th century, as the original mark of the beginnings of poetry, blindness was praised or vituperated, depending on the degree of adherence to the sacred character of the blind poet by those who represented literary modernity. This was the case of the translation of Goethe’s Faust by the Portuguese writer António Feliciano de Castilho, in 1872, which started the controversy known as the Question of Faust. The dispute produced a memory in which are inscribed the marks of orality that conditioned the making of the translation, considered in this text from perspectives that allow to evidence the value of oral in the order of discourse.
