Magical and religious conflict in the fictional universe of an Umbanda intellectual of the first half of the twentieth century

ABSTRACT

This research focuses on the work of the Umbanda intellectual Lourenço Braga, often quoted in Umbanda literature. The author published books mainly of doctrinal nature, however, he ventured to publish fiction, when he wrote a very interesting novel for the study of the identity construction of Umbanda in the first half of the twentieth century. This papel focuses mainly on the author’s effort to provide a narrative of Umbanda that draws the attention to the guiding principles of colletive action in force in the mid-twentieth century. The magical and religious conflict accounts for an important role both in the doctrinal work and in the novel written by de author. He made his novel as a document for the understanding of the Umbanda identity Project.
