A Requiem for Solari? Changes in Uruguayan Sociology in the 1960s and 1970s

Abstract

In the mid to late 1960s, when sociologist Aldo Solari resigned his leading position at the Institute of Social Sciences at the Universidad de la República, a new generation of social scientists attempted a radical transformation of this academic space. This paper analyzes why Solari decided to leave his position and peruses different understadings of what it mean to study social issues back then. From a political and institutional perspective, it examines how these different positions were intertwined with contemporary processes of structural change at the university and to the activity of international organizations promoting the social sciences in Latin America. All these endeavors came to a halt with the 1973 coup d’etat in Uruguay, which is the final stop of this analysis.
