A transatlantic crossing: the first generation of mediators of Bourdieu’s work in Brazil

Abstract

The article presents the results of a research on Brazilian participation in the scientific network created around Pierre Bourdieu and his collaborators, especially Monique de Saint Martin, in the 1970s and 1980s, in the research centers he directed. Posing the problem of the international circulation of ideas from agents, we identified issues related to three decisive moments in the trajectory of those who introduced Bourdieu’s work in Brazil: 1) their forms of insertion in the network, considering their previous relationships, institutional bonds, the mobilized capitals; 2) evidence of the socialization process of Brazilians in Bourdieu’s group formed at the CSE and CSEC in the 1970s and 1980s; 3) the moment of dissolution of the network, which seems to correspond to the decisive step of the social aging of Brazilians, when they acquired important posts in Brazil and developed their own research programs, at the time when Bourdieu became a “global thinker”. For this, we used the analysis of trajectories based on the letters he exchanged with these agents cataloged in his Archives, as well as interviews with network participants, résumés and testimonies available in magazines and books.
