An ethnography mismatch: the presence of pasts in a neighborhood

Abstract

In order to discuss the relationship between ethnography, history and memory, specifically with regard to how the ‘past’ is perceived, represented and used in the present, projecting itself in the future, the article reflects critically on a research carried out in the 1990s on a historic and “popular” neighborhood of Lisbon. The way in which different temporalities and memories are strategically evoked in the form of “myth of origin” or “performance”, contributing to the definition of a small “traditional” urban territory and the active role that the ethnographic process plays in this process are some of the points analyzed.
