Mobility and the city: epistemology and research

Abstract

The article explores mobility, dealing with the epistemological characteristics and methodological implications of some novelties that the so-called mobilities turn has brought to social research, notably to the investigation of urban processes. It reflects on the innovative dimension of current studies on mobility, which expand beyond sociology and anthropology and are situated above all in geography. Then, the definition of the social and epistemologically compatible space-time is considered as the turning point of mobility. Finally, the consequences of these positions for research in cities are explored to conclude that elements of the urban research tradition converge to this present scene, revealing epistemological and conceptual affinities with contemporary ways of thinking about the city.
