A savage paradise: the Amazon and the regionalist novels of Raimundo Moraes

Abstract

The aim of this paper is analyze the novels of Raimundo Moraes: Os igaraúnas, O mirante do Baixo Amazonas and Ressuscitados, all of them published at the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s. From the textual aspects of those narratives and from some of the author's essays, the article intends to link those issues with the cultural trend and the politics aspects. That relation makes possible identify not only the picturesque of the region, but also the conflicts among different intellectuals. The plot of the novels and its characters are reflections of the author about intellectual work and the new conditions of the intellectual field.
