Evolution of socioeconomic development index of Paraná cities which receive royalties from Itaipu Binational

The aim of this paper is to verify some socioeconomic inequalities aspects in the cities bordering the Itaipu Lake of Western Paraná, from 2000 to 2009. The question is whether the development index of these cities is increasing at the expense of royalties received. To do so, was created a Socioeconomic Development Index (IDS) through multivariate analysis, using principal components. The results refute the hypothesis that the development index of the cities bordering the Itaipu Lake is consistent with the royalties received, i.e., refuted the idea that the larger the collection of royalties, the higher the IDS municipalities. Except for Itaipulândia, all cities had absolute increase of IDS, taking the extremes years (2000 and 2009) for analysis. When analyzing the geometric growth rate of IDS of these cities, everywhere showed positive rates. It means that development indicators of these cities increased over the years, improving the quality of life of the residents. However, the geometric growth rate of royalties (-7.8 a.a.) showed that the cities have been receiving lower real values over the years. Furthermore, the correlation between IDS and collection of royalties showed that all the cities were negatively correlated, i.e., the increase (or low) values of IDS is correlated with a reduction (or high) of the values of the royalties.
