This text is the result of observations made during a course (Magistério Indígena) taught in the indigenous community of Taracuá, on the Uaupés river, an important tributary of the Negro river, in northwestern Brazilian Amazonia. These observations refer to indigenous interpretations about the origin of the world according to western science and the Judeo- Christian tradition. From the point of view of this indigenous group, western explanations are variations on the theme derived from indigenous knowledge.
