Open-access “The good and brave NORDESTE” A Cultural Magazine in the Post-War Period (Recife, 1945-65)

This paper aims to present the Nordeste magazine and analyse its emergence in 1945, shortly after the end of the Estado Novo and the Second World War, as well as some aspects of its first phase, between 1945 and 1955. It begins by examining this historical context and reflecting on some of its main artistic and intellectual demands. It then seeks to analyse the economic conditions that made the creation of this cultural periodical possible, particularly its relationship with the Recife daily Jornal do Commercio. Finally, the text discusses the typology of Nordeste, which was initially launched as a monthly cultural periodical. It had characteristics like those of a newspaper or literary supplement, yet it considered itself a cultural magazine, as evidenced by its reception. It should be emphasised that, although the focus here is not solely on the content of this editorial project, attention is given to the conditions that facilitated the actual realisation of this magazine.
