About the journal

Basic information

Psico-USF is a vehicle for the dissemination and discussion of scientific production in the field of Psychology and is linked to the Graduate Program in Psychology at Universidade São Francisco (USF) under the responsibility of editor-in-chief Prof. Dr. Lucas de Francisco Carvalho and associated editors Profa. Dra. Ana Paula Porto Noronha and Prof. Dr. Evandro Moraes Peixoto. Created in 1996, Psico-USF came to improve the already exiting tradition at USF, which has been disseminating the production in the area of Psychology in the form of journals since 1974. The first phase of the journal was called Klínica (1974-1982), then it was renamed to Revista das Faculdades Franciscanas (1983-1984) and after a year it changed its name to Revista de Psicologia (1985-1989). For five years (1990 to 1995) the journal was suspended and from 1996 Psico-USF was created with the purpose of serving as a forum for the presentation and dissemination of current research in the field of Psychology.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Psico-USF, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic legends.

Scope and policy

I – Editorial line and selection criteria

Psico-USF is a journal that seeks to promote the discussion on scientific production in the field of Psychology. Our publications are multidisciplinary, focusing on psychological processes, psychological assessment, instrument construction and validation, behavioral processes, neuropsychology, psychotherapy, and other relevant areas to one or more aspects of psychology. Manuscripts of a strictly theoretical nature are not accepted. The purpose of the journal is to serve as a forum for the presentation and dissemination of current research in the field of Psychology and as a vehicle for knowledge dissemination for researchers, professionals, and others interested in the field.

This is an open-access journal, according to the definition of open access by the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) and there are no submission or publication fees. It publishes texts in Portuguese, English, and Spanish and uses the process of blind peer review. It is a quarterly publication linked to the Graduate Program in Psychology at Universidade São Francisco since 1996. The published content does not reflect the position, opinion or philosophy of either the Postgraduate Programme or the University of San Francisco. The copyrights of Psico-USF publications belong to the Universidade São Francisco. The authors are allowed to reproduce their own material, previously authorized by the editor of the journal.

II – Description of the types of collaborations accepted by the journal Psico-USF

Original works related to Psychology that fall into the following categories:

  • Research report: investigation based on empirical data, using scientific methodology. Limited to 20-30 pages, including resumo, abstract, resumen, figures, tables, and references. Subtopics required: Introduction, Methods (Participants, Instruments, Proceedings, Data analysis), Results, Discussion, (or Results and Discussion, together) and Final Considerations (optional). In the case of Results and Discussion as one section, Final Considerations are mandatory. The Methodology and the Data Analysis must be based on current strategies regarding the specificities of development in the area. In the Discussion, the results must be broadly based on the literature retrieved for the composition of the Introduction. At least 35% of the references must be up to date, that is, up to 5 years from the date of submission.
  • Literature Review: minimally systematic review of the literature, whose product is a critical assessment of the selected material. Authors are expected to: (a) clearly define a problem; (b) summarize prior investigations to inform the reader of the state of the research; (c) identify relations, contradictions, gaps and/or inconsistencies in the literature; and (d) suggest further research steps to solve the identified problems. The manuscript must manuscript include Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (in the case of Results and Discussion as one section, Final Considerations are mandatory); the restrictions proposed for the survey must be justified and cover at least 10 years, cover at least three relevant databases in the research area and include the English language. In addition, survey procedures must be detailed and necessarily performed by at least two independent researchers. It is also suggested that the manuscripts present the Flow Diagram, such as the one available for download here: http://www.prisma-statement.org/PRISMAStatement/FlowDiagram.aspx. Minimum of 20 and maximum of 35 pages, counted from the first abstract, including all other topics, figures, and tables.
  • Systematic Review (followed or not by meta-analysis): literature review that follows scientific methods that explicitly aim to reduce biases, synthesizing all relevant studies to respond to a given question. In this case, elements such as search strategies (in detail), eligibility criteria, data extraction methods, tools and criteria for quality assessment of reports, risk of bias and publication bias (the latter, in case of meta-analysis), should be present. Furthermore, in the case of meta-analysis, the data analysis should be accurately described. The manuscript must contain Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion (in the case of Results and Discussion as one section, Final Considerations are mandatory), as well as present the Flow Diagram, available for download here: http://www.prisma-statement.org/PRISMAStatement/FlowDiagram.aspx. We also suggest that authors follow the best practice guidelines for systematic review, which can be visualized here: https://www.scielo.br/pdf/estpsi/v36/1982-0275-estpsi-36-e180144.pdf. Minimum of 20 and maximum of 35 pages, counted from the first abstract, including all other topics, figures and, tables.
  • Review: critical review of recently published work (up to 3 years), describing the main characteristics and potential uses. Limited to 5 pages.

Note: The page count starts on the abstract page and ends on the page where the last table/figure is presented.

Ethical aspects in the editorial process

III – Editorial norms

The Publication Norms of Psico-USF are based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association - APA/ 7th edition (2019) regarding the organization and presentation of the manuscript.

1. Selection of articles: the journal will assess the manuscript that falls into the categories described above, according to the initial analysis made by the editor. The analysis criteria refer to originality, relevance of the theme, and quality of the scientific methodology, as well as observation of the editorial standards adopted by the journal.

2. Unpublished work: Work submitted for publication at Psico-USF may not have been previously published, nor be under consideration by another journal. The availability of the file as a preprint is within the norms of Psico-USF and does not constitute prior publication. Manuscripts are subject to verification for plagiarism and verification for fraudulent data. Such verification will occur at the end of the editorial assessment process and, regardless of the results indicated in the opinions, in case of plagiarism or fraudulent data the manuscript will be immediately rejected and filed.

3. Authors: All authors must declare knowledge of the content presented in the article as well as confirm its veracity and substantial participation in the article writing process. Authors should make themselves available to make corrections of possible errors verified during the evaluation process of the submitted manuscript. The content and statements contained in the manuscripts are the authors’ sole responsibility. Authors are responsible for ensuring that there is no information in the article that can identify them, therefore information about the name of the institution and specific ethical committee of universities, research groups, and identification of the authors, should be omitted from the file intended for blind evaluation. Ethical procedures for research with humans must be respected, including non-identification of research participants or institutions.

4. Peer review: Manuscripts submitted will be reviewed by the Editorial Board, which may request review by members of the Advisory Board or ad hoc reviewers, at their discretion, provided that there is no conflict of interests on the part of the reviewers. The review of the article is done with due respect for confidentiality, preserving the author(s) and the ad hoc reviewers identity. The opinions are objective, critical and constructive, aiming at better qualifying scientific information. After the reviewers’ evaluations, one of the editorial assistants will prepare a summary of the opinions, so the authors will receive a summary of the reviewers’ comments, which is the editor’s responsibility.

The article can be accepted, accepted subject to changes, or rejected. In case of acceptance subject to changes, authors will receive notification of the suggested changes and the reformulated work must be sent online within the established deadline. The reformulated article will be reassessed by one of the reviewers to define whether it has complied with the feedback. In case of rejection with explicit justification, a resubmission is encouraged based on the recommendations of the review.

5. Editor: The editor declares no conflict of interest on the published or rejected articles and is responsible for the rejection or acceptance of articles. When some error is found, he or she will promote publications for correction and retraction.

6. Editorial board: The editorial board is committed to following the ethical aspects of publication and in case of ethical complaint; it is responsible for investigating ethical misconduct allegations on matters related to the journal and for issuing retractions, corrections, and clarifications. It is also committed to keep academic records and data about authors and reviewers and to investigate fraudulent or plagiarized content.

7. Copyrights: The copyrights of the published articles belong to Psico-USF. The total reproduction of the articles in other publications or for any other purpose requires written authorization from the editor of Psico-USF. People interested in partially reproducing the articles published in this journal (fragments no longer than 500 words, tables, figures and other illustrations) should have written permission from the author(s). Manuscripts submitted containing fragments of other publications should comply with the limits specified to guarantee the originality of the submitted work. It is recommended that authors avoid the reproduction of figures, tables, and drawings from other publications and, if not possible, the manuscript will only be sent for analysis if accompanied by written authorization from the copyright owner of the original work for reproduction in Psycho-USF.

8. Open access: all articles published by Psico-USF are freely available to read, download and share on the website www.scielo.br/pusf. We emphasize that no fee is charged for submission, processing, and publication of the submitted manuscripts.

9. Psico-USF guidelines for preprint

According to recommendations by SciELO, Psico-USF allows authors to make manuscripts submitted to the journal available in preprint format. To this end, authors should request preprint availability from the editorial board. In addition, the document to be made available must contain, as the first page of the manuscript, the following information:

IV – Information for preparation of manuscripts

Formatting: articles should be typed double-spaced (including references), using font Times New Roman, size 12, the number of pages should be appropriate to the category of the article, and pages should be numbered starting on the page of the first abstract (which will be numbered as page 1). Pages should be A4 size, with top and bottom margins of 2.5 cm and left and right with 3 cm.

The presentation of manuscripts must follow the following order:

(Note: Each abstract should be on a separate sheet, (not exceeding 150 words each), so there will be three pages of the complete file intended for abstracts in the respective languages).

 Cover sheet with identification, including:

  1. Complete title in Portuguese, English and Spanish, no longer than 12 words. The title should be appropriate, clear, and may be creative, informing the reader about the purpose of the work. It should not include names of cities, countries or other geographic information.
  2. Suggestion of running title for the header in the original language of the manuscript, not exceeding 5 words.
  3. Name of each one of the authors and ORCID.
  4. Institutional affiliation of each author (include name of university, city, state, and country).
  5. Optional footnote with acknowledgments and information about institutional or financial support given to the project.
  6. Footnote with the postal and e-mail address of the corresponding author whom the reader may contact.
  7. Indication of contact details for correspondence with the editor about the processing of the manuscript, including phone (landline and cell phone) and e-mail.
  8. Information suppressed in the text (if any). Example: Research Ethics Committee approval number, researchers’ institution, etc.

  2. Suggestion of running title for the header in the original language, not exceeding 5 words.

Sheet containing Abstract, in Portuguese

  1. The abstract should have no longer than 150 words for research reports (systematic or not). For reviews, the abstract is not necessary.
  2. The abstract does not need to include information on the literature in the area, nor references. The objective must be clear, informing, if appropriate, the problem, the methods, and the hypotheses of the study. For research reports, the methods must offer brief information on the participants, instruments, and special procedures used. Only the most relevant results regarding the objectives of the research must be mentioned. The abstract of a critical review or a theoretical study must include: topic discussed (in one phrase), objective, thesis, or construct under analysis by the organizer of the manuscript, sources used (for example, observations made by the author, published literature), and conclusion.
  3. Provide, after the abstract, 3 to 5 keywords in the original language of the manuscript, all of them starting in uppercase and separated by semicolon. In order to use more adequate descriptors, check the BVS-Psi descriptors database, which may be accessed at the following URL: www.bvs-psi.org.br.

Sheet containing the Abstract, in English, compatible with the original abstract

  1. The abstract in English should follow the same specifications as the original abstract, followed by keywords, compatible with the keywords in the original language.
  2. It is the journal’s practice to make a final revision of the abstract, reserving the right to correct it, if necessary. This is a very important item of the work, as, once published, it will become available in all the indexers of the journal.

Sheet containing abstract, in Spanish, compatible with the original abstract

  1. The abstract in Spanish should must follow the same specifications as the original abstract, followed by keywords, compatible with the keywords in the original language.
  2. It is the journal’s practice to make a final revision of the abstract, reserving the right to correct it, if necessary. This is a very important item of the work, as, once published, it will become available in all the indexers of the journal.

Text Structure

  1. There must be Titles and subtitles in all categories of original papers. The text must have an organization of easy recognition, marked by a system of titles and subtitles reflecting this organization. In case of research reports, the text must present: Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, as well as Final Considerations, when necessary. Manuscripts in other editorial categories must present titles and subtitles according to the case.
  2. Footnotes. Should be avoided whenever possible. However, if there is no other alternative, they should be indicated by Arabic numerals in the text and inserted on the footer of the page on which they are indicated.
  3. Figures and Tables. The location suggested for insertion of figures and tables should be indicated in the text and they should be presented after the References, one per page. The words Figures and Tables, throughout the text, should always be written with the first letter capitalized and should include their respective number. The standards do not include the words Charts or Diagrams, only Tables and Figures.
  4. Citation of Authors. Should be made according to the APA standards, 7th edition, as exemplified in Section V. All names of the authors whose works are cited, must be followed by the date of publication, the first time they are cited in each paragraph. In case of full transcription of a text must be enclosed by quotation marks, and the citation of the author must be followed by the page number quoted. A direct quotation with 40 or more words should be displayed in a freestanding block of text, starting on a new line, with a margin of 5 spaces, as in a new paragraph. The font size should be 12, as in the rest of the text. Do not use bold or italics in this section. The highlights should be underlined.
  5. Psico-USF recommends that authors review their text, observing associations between the sections and the subheadings used. Single-sentence paragraphs should be avoided. We emphasize that the objective(s) of the study must be clearly explained. Only the sources consulted and mentioned in the text should appear in the references section.
  6. Figures: They should be presented with their respective legends and captions, one per page. Captions must be displayed below the figures, always in lowercase. To ensure quality reproduction, figures containing drawings must be submitted in photographic quality. Do not produce graphic figures with elaborate colors or patterns that may be mistaken for each other when editing the journal. As the published version cannot exceed the width of 8,3 cm for simple figures and 17.5 for complex figures, the author must make sure that the legends maintain visual quality in case reduction is necessary.
  7. Tables: They should preferably be rendered in MSWord and displayed in black and white. Headings should be placed above tables and should indicate the content in no more than 15 words. The first letter of each word in the headings should be capitalized and followed by lowercase letters. Do not use capital, bold or italic letters inside the table. The table should not exceed 17.5 cm wide and 23.5 cm long.

V – Reference list

Start the reference section on a new page. Double-space should be used with no line spaces between citations. References should be listed in alphabetical order, by the authors’ surname, which should not be replaced by en dashes or em dashes. References should be arranged according to the guidelines established by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association - APA/ 7th edition (2019). The examples given indicate how to organize the citations and references of the manuscript.

Examples of citations in the text

Multiple-authors texts:

Two authors: cite both names in-text every time you reference them, followed by the date in parentheses. Use "&" when quoted in parentheses (as shown below),

"The method proposed by Siqueland and Delucia (1969)", but "the method was initially proposed for the study of vision (Siqueland & Delucia, 1969)".

Three or more authors: cite the surname of the first author followed by "et al." and the date. Use "&" between the penultimate and the last name when quoted in parenthesis.

Citations of old and re-edited works

Cite the author and the dates of original/consulted publications. For example: Freud (1911/1972).

Citations of secondary sources– avoid whenever possible

When an author is quoted from another consulted publication, without the original being used. For example: Lipowiski (1984, cited by Silva & Müller, 2007).

The references should include only the consulted work (as in the example below),

VI – Manuscript submission

Manuscripts should be submitted only through our online submission system in the following URL: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/pusf/login.

Guide for manuscript submission

The following documents must be attached to the online submission system: cover letter, submission checklist, note on the authors, identified cover sheet, and manuscript in Times New Roman 12, without any information that may identify the authors (except the information on the identified cover sheet) in .doc or .docx (Word) format.
Note: all the files mentioned should be entered into the system separately, totaling 5 files.

The cover letter containing the name of the authors explaining the intention to submit or resubmit the manuscript for publication should accompany every article sent to the journal. The authors should certify that there has been consent from the people involved in the samples and that their privacy as well as the ethical procedures for research with humans have been respected. It is recommended that authors consider the APA’s ethical guidelines to direct the preparation of their manuscripts. It is necessary to explain that, if the article is accepted for publication, copyrights will be transferred to Psico-USF. Besides, the cover letter must contain the suggestion of reviewers.

Regarding the suggestion of reviewers: during the submission of the manuscript, Psico-USF requests that the authors indicate at least three potential reviewers who have the necessary expertise to review the manuscript. Nominations must contain full names, institutional affiliation, academic titles, and respective e-mail addresses. The reviewers must be Ph.D.’s and be from institutions other than those to which the authors of the manuscript are linked. Along with the name and contact email of the reviewers, three keywords related to the potential reviewer's expertise must be presented.

The submission checklist should be downloaded by clicking HERE. This file must be filled out, signed, and entered into the submission system.

The notes on the authors should be submitted in a separate file in the system. This file should include a brief description (approximately 60 words) of the author(s) current activities and educational background, address for correspondence to be published with the article, and e-mail and ORCID of all authors. In the notes on the authors, the institution to which the authors are affiliated (including city, state, and country) should also be indicated.

Note: For manuscripts accepted in the initial stages of evaluation, the reformulated version of the article, if any, should be sent via the online system, in the "Revisions" field, meeting the stipulated deadline. The reformulated version should be accompanied by a letter to the editor indicating the reformulations made 0according to the opinion or justifying, theoretically or methodologically, the maintenance of the text without changes.
