ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

The Journal of Contemporary Administration (Revista de Administração Contemporânea – RAC) was created in 1997 and is published bimonthly (continuous publication) by ANPAD (Brazilian Academy of Management), with open access to its full-text (peer-reviewed) content online. Registered under ISSN 1982-7849 (online) and ISSN 1415-6555 (print version from 1997 to 2010)

RAC accepts submissions from research efforts supported by different approaches. The submitted texts must address contemporary issues of regional importance without losing sight of the articulations of the global context. Thus, the objective is to encourage debates, the development of public policies, and new forms of management in line with contemporary social challenges. Proposals for special issues by guests are encouraged and welcomed. Besides the Editorial, the journal publishes seven types of manuscripts: Theoretical-empirical Articles; Theoretical Essays; Methodological Articles; Provocations; Executive Letters; Technological Articles; and Cases for Teaching.

Open Access

RAC is aligned with Open Science practices: open data, materials, and codes, in addition to the dissemination of additional information related to the editorial process.

Since mid-February of 2023, the authors retain the copyright relating to their article and grant the journal RAC, from ANPAD, the right of first publication, with the work simultaneously licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0), as stated in the article’s PDF document. This license provides that the article published can be shared (allows you to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format) and adapted (allows you to remix, transform, and create from the material for any purpose, even commercial) by anyone.

Ethics in Publication

RAC is a member of, and subscribes to the principles of the COPE – Commitee on Publication Ethics. RAC is aligned with Open Science practices: open data, materials, codes, education, peer-review, and preprints, in addition to the dissemination of additional information related to the editorial process. All datasets and materials published by RAC are available on our page at Harvard Dataverse. In addition, RAC, through its editorial scope, prioritizes works that explore topics relevant to society. And, for that, it uses the themes highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN

Journal of Contemporary Administration (RAC) follows Anpad's Handbook of Best Practices in Scientific Publication, as well as the Academy of Management (AOM) Code of Ethics

Focus and Scope

By positioning itself at the forefront of theoretical and methodological innovation, RAC assumes an interdisciplinary perspective aiming at articulations between the regional and the global. Scientific contributions that investigate and problematize significant issues of economic, social, and political concern are welcome, especially where these perspectives demand attention on ethical, diversity, responsibility, governance, and sustainability issues. We prioritize works that promote critical epistemological approaches, that expand conceptual boundaries, and articulate theory and practice in a symbiotic (and not binary) way and in an innovative way in the production of responsible knowledge, inside and outside the academy. The horizons of contemporary administration are broad and involve all areas of administration and their respective interdisciplinary relationships, but themes of special concern for RAC from an ethical and sustainable perspective include, among other possibilities:

  • Responsible management;
  • Human and social management in organizations;
  • Organizational strategies;
  • Organizational and individual behavior;
  • Marketing and consumption;
  • New technologies and information and communication systems;
  • Administration and education;
  • Teaching and research in administration;
  • Sustainability;
  • Market and society;
  • Finance, governance, and compliance;
  • Public administration;
  • City management;
  • Entrepreneurship;
  • Organizational and management theories;
  • Market and labor relations.

RAC seeks to promote communication between governmental, business and industrial, academic and non-governmental organizations, which are fundamental in solving problems related to societal problems involving management, with a regional emphasis on global articulation. It also seeks to advance interdisciplinary research of social relevance on contemporary issues such as applied technologies, climate change, biodiversity, environmental pollution and waste, renewable and non-renewable natural resources, diversity, inequality, poverty, the labor market, and sustainability.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

We accept preprint articles when they are stored in trustful counterparts, such as Scielo PreprintsSSRN, and OSF.

Peer Review Process

RAC, in line with Open Science practices, in January/2020 started to encourage reviewers to join the Open Peer Review, in which the journal publishes, on the title page of each article, information about the editors and reviewers who contributed to the peer review process for each article. After the article they reviewed is accepted for publication, reviewers and editors are invited to authorize to reveal their identities. Since August/2020, RAC fosters the practice of report's sharing (Open Reports).

As of August 07, 2020, new submissions for RAC must comply with the following policies for Open Peer Review. The final version of the article, published in the journal, includes the name of the editor responsible for the peer review.

Open Data

RAC encourages data sharing and adopts open science icons:

a) Data sharing is an important mechanism for promoting scientific progress and fostering a culture of openness and accountability in research. Data sharing also expands the pool of individuals who can conduct research. For researchers who are geographically dispersed or have limited resources, open and freely accessible data helps advance scientific discovery.

b) Since 2018, to encourage and recognize authors who choose to share their data and materials, the appropriate COS open science icon has been placed on the cover of the PDF of the published article. The icons are a useful way to signal the journal's openness to sharing data and materials and to recognize authors who have made their materials or data publicly accessible.

Authors are encouraged to publish their data in recommended repositories. For a list of generic and subject-specific repositories that meet our peer review criteria, see here.

Fees

The Journal of Contemporary Administration (Revista de Administração Contemporânea, RAC) adopts the policy of not imposing charges for fees at any stage of the editorial process, from submission to publication, with the cost of the editorial process being the responsibility of the journal, as well as maintenance of distribution and unrestricted access to documents published by RAC.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Honest errors are a part of science and publishing and require publication of a correction when they are detected. RAC expects authors to inform the RAC’s EIC of any errors of fact they have noticed (or have been informed of) in their article once published. Corrections are made at the RAC’s discretion. A correction notice will be published in the next available online issue. The online version of the article will link to the correction notice, and vice versa. Besides, correction notices will be indexed and linked to the original records in Scielo. and other indexers.

Retractions

Retractions are considered by RAC’s editors in cases of evidence of unreliable data or findings, plagiarism, duplicate publication, and unethical research. We may consider an expression of concern notice if an article is under investigation. All retraction notices explain why the article was retracted. When the paper is included in an issue we replace the version of the article that will be posted containing just the metadata, with a retraction note replacing the original text. The *.pdf document will be replaced with a version watermarked with “Retracted Version”. Yet, the original text will remain accessible. In rare cases, we may have to remove the original content for legal reasons. In such cases, we will leave the metadata (title and authors) and replace the text with a note saying the article has been removed for legal reasons. A retraction notice will also be published online. Retraction notices will be always indexed and linked to the original records in Scielo and other indexers.

Referee Misconduct

Referee misconduct can range from minor issues, such as rude or unconstructive reviews, to major issues, such as the appropriation of an author's ideas or data. RAC entrusts reviewers with a high level of responsibility and keeps a very clear complaint policy. RAC knows reviewers, when performing their tasks, have access to privileged information (i.e. unpublished research) and their recommendations can sway the publication outcome. Unfortunately, there are rare occasions when that trust can be misplaced. Minor problems are relatively easy to respond to. Delete rude comments, and don't invite reviewers again if they supply poor quality, late, or unconstructive reviews. There may be other instances where RAC’s editors receive complaints from authors about reviewer misconduct:

Appropriated manuscript

A possible complaint of reviewer misconduct concerns the alleged appropriation of the manuscript during the review process. An author may raise a complaint if they discover their ideas/manuscript are used in a published paper. They may conclude that these can only have been appropriated during the review process. These issues can be complicated because there is likely to be some time lag between the review process conducted at RAC and the publication of the appropriated material. Because complaints may involve another journal and another editorial team, it's best to make sure you keep them informed. We recommend following the steps outlined in the COPE Flowcharts., which RAC is a member of, and subscribes to the principles of COPE.

Appeals

Following the rejection of a paper, the author may appeal to the RAC’s EIC. RAC keeps a clear appeals policy stating under what circumstances an appeal will be considered, and how the appeal process will be handled. See item “Complaints procedures” here.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

Submissions for the Journal of Contemporary Administration (Revista de Administração Contemporânea, RAC) are assigned to editors in an effort to minimize potential conflicts of interest. The following relationships between editors and authors are considered conflicts and are avoided:

Current colleagues, OR

Recent colleagues, OR

Recent co-authors, OR

Doctoral students for which editor served as committee chair.

After papers are assigned, associate editors are required to inform the editor-in-chief of any conflicts not included in the list above. In the event that none of the editors satisfy all of the conflict screens, associate editors who are least conflicted will be assigned to the manuscript. RAC’s submissions are also assigned to reviewers to minimize conflicts of interest. After papers are assigned, reviewers are asked to inform the editor of any conflicts that may exist.

ANPAD's Handbook of Best Practices in Scientific Publication imposes additional conditions, which RAC assigns consent: Papers authored by the Editor should not be published, even if this authorship is shared with other authors, and not even by leaders of the maintainers of the journal, except in special cases. When this is the case, this specificity should be cited and justified in the Editorial of the issue, and it is also necessary to explicitly indicate a special editor for that specific article, evidently maintaining the anonymity of the authors and evaluators.

Adoption of Similarity Software

RAC adopts iThenticate as a similarity detection system to verify received articles, and only for articles not rejected in the document review stage, after content relevance analysis.

To help address and prevent plagiarism, RAC incorporates iThenticate into its editorial workflows. The main features of iThenticate are i) prevent plagiarism by detecting textual similarities which could indicate misconduct; and ii) compare full-text manuscripts against a database with millions of articles, thousands of journals, books from hundreds of publishers, and billion web pages. The main function of iThenticate is to identify the textual overlap of a manuscript against a database of published works and internet sources.

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

REVISTA DE ADMINISTRAÇÃO CONTEMPORÂNEA (RAC) recognizes the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the scientific and editorial fields. The advancement of these technologies brings important benefits, such as support in writing, translation, and data analysis, but also raises ethical challenges related to authorship, content integrity, and transparency in the scientific process. In this context, RAC establishes the following general guidelines for the use of AI by authors, reviewers, and editors.

First and foremost, it is essential to emphasize that responsibility for the published scientific content remains exclusively human. Under no circumstances can AI be considered an author of articles or peer reviews. Only human researchers and reviewers have the capacity to assume intellectual, ethical, and legal responsibility for academic production.
For authors, the use of AI for support functions, such as grammar correction, text translation, or style adjustments, is permitted, provided it is properly disclosed in the manuscript. When AI is used in more substantive stages of research—for example, in the literature review, text generation, data analysis, or model building—this information must be explicitly stated in the methods section. The author must indicate the tool employed, the version used, and the specific purpose of its application, ensuring that readers clearly understand the extent of its use. Furthermore, in cases where AI is an integral part of the scientific method, authors are encouraged to follow international transparency protocols.

Reviewers and editors must also adopt responsible practices regarding the use of AI. Reviewers may rely on automated tools only for auxiliary tasks, such as text summarization or language clarity checks, but they must never delegate their critical evaluation to AI systems. The substantive assessment of scientific quality, originality, and methodological rigor must always remain under human judgment. Similarly, associate editors may employ AI to assist in administrative functions, such as initial manuscript screening or text similarity checks, but all editorial decisions must be made exclusively by humans. Whenever AI is used by reviewers or editors, its use must be made transparent to the Editor-in-Chief.

RAC stresses that any practice of manipulation through AI—such as embedding hidden instructions or “concealed prompts” in manuscripts or reviews—is strictly prohibited, as such practices compromise the integrity of the editorial process. The journal also reaffirms its commitment to continuously educating its scientific community about the ethical use of AI, by providing supporting materials and updating these guidelines in line with technological advances and international standards.

In summary, the use of AI is accepted and even encouraged when it contributes to greater clarity, efficiency, and transparency in scientific production and evaluation. However, such use can never replace human responsibility, which remains a non-negotiable principle in all stages of the editorial process.

Key Recommendations

(a) AI must never be listed as an author of articles or peer reviews.
(b) The use of AI by authors must be disclosed in the manuscript, whether in a note, in the methods section, or in the acknowledgments.
(c) The use of AI in substantive tasks (literature review, data analysis, text generation) must be described clearly, including the tool, version, and purpose.
(d) Reviewers and editors may use AI only for auxiliary tasks, never for critical judgment or decision-making.
(e) Any use of AI by reviewers or editors must be communicated to the Editor-in-Chief.
(f) The insertion of hidden prompts or concealed instructions in manuscripts or reviews is strictly prohibited.
(g) RAC is committed to promoting continuous education on the ethical and responsible use of AI within its academic community.

Gender and Sex Issues

RAC is constantly working to expand the authorship and representation of its editorial board. The journal's objectives are:

 Achieve gender equity for authors and reviewers, as well as for members of the Editorial Board, especially among the Associate Editors. To do so, the journal aims on improving the representation rate by 15% a year, until it reaches equality on all fronts.

 Authors can refer to the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER)guidelines and the SAGER guidelines checklist. These offer systematic approaches to the use and editorial review of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, outcome reporting, and research interpretation - however, please note there is no single, universally agreed-upon set of guidelines for defining sex and gender.

Ethics Committee

Journal of Contemporary Administration (RAC) follows Anpad's Handbook of Best Practices in Scientific Publication, as well as the Academy of Management (AOM) Code of Ethics. Authors are advised to:

Prudence in research design, human subject use, and confidentiality and reporting of results is essential. Proper attribution of work is a necessity.

Informed Consent: When authors conduct research, they obtain the informed consent of the individual or individuals, using language that is reasonably understandable to that person or persons. Written or oral consent, permission, and assent are documented appropriately.

Ethical Conducting and reporting: It is the duty of authors conducting research to design, implement, analyze, report, and present their findings rigorously.

Handling Confidential Data: Authors have an obligation to ensure the protection of confidential information. When gathering confidential information, they should take into account the long-term uses of the information, including its potential placement in public archives or the examination of information by others. Authors must take reasonable precautions to protect the confidentiality rights of others; Confidential information is treated as such even if it lacks legal protection or privilege; When using private information, authors protect the confidentiality of individually identifiable information. Information is private when an individual can reasonably expect that the information will not be made public with personal identifiers.

Guarantee of Accuracy and Integrity of Work: The individuals who conduct the work are responsible for identifying who meets these criteria and ideally should do so when planning the work, making modifications as appropriate as the work progresses. The corresponding author takes primary responsibility for communication with the journal during the manuscript submission, peer review, and publication process, and typically ensures that all the journal’s administrative requirements, such as providing details of authorship, ethics committee approval, clinical trial registration documentation, and gathering conflict of interest forms and statements, are properly completed, although these duties may be delegated to one or more co-authors. At RAC we want authors to assure us that all authors included in a paper fulfill the criteria of authorship. In addition, we want assurance that there is no one else who fulfills the criteria but has not been included as an author. When we encounter disagreements among authors we follow guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which RAC is a member of, and subscribes to the principles of — see here and here.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Types of Documents Accepted

  • Theoretical-empirical articles;
  • Theoretical Essays;
  • Methodological Articles;
  • Provocations;
  • Executive Letters;
  • Technological Articles; and
  • Cases for Teaching.

Submissions can be made in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. However, given the journal's internationalization process, the articles published must have an English version, which will be considered the main one. In this case, after approval for publication of the articles submitted in Portuguese or Spanish, the authors must also send the English version of the article, with adequate vernacular quality and content identical to the approved version, so that the work can be published. Thus, the translation of the approved manuscript is the responsibility of the authors. As a way to democratize and honor the knowledge generated in Portuguese and Spanish, authors can optionally publish the versions in the original language together with the English version.

In this context, the journal publishes several textual genres of scientific and academic basis in the field of Administration in an interdisciplinary way and aligned with Open Science practices: open data, materials, source, education, preprints, and peer-review, as well as the dissemination of additional information related to the editorial process. The Journal of Contemporary Administration (RAC) is a member of and abides by the principles of COPE – Committee on Publication Ethics for scholarly publication, with high quality and peer-reviewed contributions.

All articles published in RAC receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

Authors' Contribution

Following APA’s recommendation, RAC adopts the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) for authors’ contributorship and require author contribution statements for all published articles. Author contribution statements promote equity and inclusion by specifically attributing contributions to each author.

Authors must carefully fill in their data in the system (MANDATORY FOR ALL AUTHORS, maximum of 4 authors). Make sure that all fields are filled in correctly, affiliations (max. two per author; in the case of a student, inform the course and institution to which they are affiliated), the institution’s complete address, and authors’ contributions following CRediT Taxonomy. All authors must present their ORCID in the submission. If there is more than one author, order according to the contribution of each one in the work.

Manuscript Preparation

The Theoretical-empirical articles, Theoretical Essays, Methodological Articles, Provocations, Executive Letters, Technological Articles, and Cases for Teaching must be submitted electronically through the  ScholarOne Manuscripts platform: http://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/rac-scielo

Article Submission Format

RAC follows the APA Style for the formatting and structuring of text, citations, and references. Citations in the body of the text must be presented including the surname of the author of the source, the date of publication, and the page number (if applicable), according to APA Style (2020). The list of references with the complete information of the authors cited in the body of the text must be presented in alphabetical order at the end of the text, according to the APA Style (2020). Please refer to the document Brief Summary of the APA Style, available in English and Portuguese. Authors should provide the DOI or URL of each reference whenever possible.

Thesaurus

In line with SciELO recommendations, the RAC now requires the use of controlled vocabularies (Thesauri) for keyword selection. The purpose is to enhance international visibility, standardize descriptors, and facilitate indexing in national and international databases.

Authors should select their keywords from internationally recognized thesauri in the fields of Management, Social Sciences, Education, and Psychology, such as:

  • APA Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms (APA)
  • ERIC Thesaurus (Education Resources Information Center – U.S. Department of Education)
  • UNESCO Thesaurus (UNESCO – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)
  • EuroVoc (European Union – Publications Office)
  • MeSH – Medical Subject Headings (National Library of Medicine – NIH)
  • DeCS – Health Sciences Descriptors (BIREME/PAHO/WHO)
  • RAC recommends the APA, ERIC, UNESCO, and EuroVoc thesauri as the most relevant to Management, Psychology, Education, and Public Policy. MeSH/DeCS may be used in interdisciplinary articles that involve health and management.
  • Authors may include up to two free keywords when no adequate terms are available in the recommended thesauri.

Digital Assets

Authors need to ensure the quality of the submitted content, especially regarding content other than the text - authors must present professionalism with high-quality figures (resolution and color palette), schemes, charts, tables, computer algorithms, etc.

RAC demands that authors present, at the moment of submission, the necessary permissions to use any material protected by copyright – for example, illustrations, artwork, photographs, tables, graphics, charts - including any materials from online sources, even if minor adaptations to the original work are made. To reproduce copyrighted content, the authors must obtain written permission from the owners of the rights (usually the publisher) and send the permission to RAC’s Editorial Office (rac@anpad.org.br).

Citations and References

In this step, authors must also inform if there was funding for the research. In the case of a research result with funding, quote the funding agency and the process number only in the ScholarOne system. In the event the article is approved for publication, this information will be included by the editorial team in the final version for publication.
