ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief History

The Brazilian Ceramic Society (Associação Brasileira de Cerâmica - ABCeram) was founded in 1953, and in March 1955 Cerâmica was first released. Its first issue published the papers presented at the first Brazilian Ceramic Congress, held in São Paulo in 1954.

Open Science Compliance

Cerâmica follows the open access model. The journal adopts a series of practices, such as the open access policy, the code of good practice for editors and encourages the use of social networks to disseminate works published by authors. Additionally, it offers authors the option to indicate their roles in articles with multiple authors during the submission process in ScholarOne, observing the taxonomy of CRediT functions. We also encourage the sharing of analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, scripts and additional materials, made available in open online repositories, such as SciELO DataZenodo, Mendeley Data, etc., if they cannot be disclosed in the work itself (this information must be indicated in the manuscript by the author(s). Cerâmica encourages the publication of preprints on public platforms such as: arXiv e SciELO Preprints, so that, if applicable, the manuscript is presented openly, before Also in line with open science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option of opening the peer review process, with or without identifying their names.

Publication Ethics

Cerâmica is committed to adhering to good practices and follows the norms and recommendations of ethics and responsibility standards in scientific communication established by national and international institutions. Among these, notable organizations include COPE, FAPESP (in Portuguese), and the “Guide to Good Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication” (in Portuguese);

Cerâmica is committed to ethics and quality in publishing. We comply with standards of ethical behavior expected of all parties involved: authors, editors and reviewers in the publication. Authors, Editors and Reviewers are encouraged to study and follow all standards of good scientific research practice;

To promote the predominance of originality of texts, the periodical adopts duplication checking programs with texts already published. Cerâmica does not accept plagiarism or any other unethical behavior in any instance. When plagiarism is detected, the author(s) are informed, with the presentation of the report generated by the software used. Cerâmica uses CopySpider plagiarism detection software. When there are doubts or questions, the editor-in-chief contacts the corresponding author;

The corresponding author, when submitting the article, declares that its content is original and guarantees that the work has not been published and is not in press or in the process of review/evaluation in any other journal;

If there are doubts, the corresponding author is requested to provide data supporting the methodology and results. The periodical follows COPE flow diagrams to identify and provide guidance on misconduct;

When suspecting ethical misconduct, the editor-in-chief will assess the situation with a view to clarifying the problem. Corrections or clarifications may be published by the journal if necessary. Cases not mentioned in these rules will be resolved by the editor-in-chief and associate editors.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

Cerâmica accepts the publication of preprints on public platforms such as: arXiv and SciELO Preprints. Authors must disclose preprint posting details, including DOI and licensing terms, upon submission of the manuscript or at any other point during consideration at Cerâmica. Once the preprint is published, the author(s) are responsible for updating the reference, including the DOI and URL of the published version of the article on the journal's website, following the journal's rules.

Peer review process

Cerâmica defines the following criteria for the evaluation process of submitted manuscripts in its editorial policy: alignment with the journal's scope, adherence to technical, grammatical, and formal standards, relevance, content quality, textual coherence, and theoretical-methodological consistency.

The evaluation process consists of three stages, namely:

1. Preliminary analysis by the editor-in-chief to verify the following: adherence to the general instructions defined by the editorial policy, alignment with the journal's focus and scope, relevance and contribution of the text, and similarity analysis using the CopySpider software. Cerâmica pays strict attention to ethical standards for conducting animal and human research, requiring certificates from relevant ethics committees during the submission process. If there is any doubt about the documentation presented, the journal may reject the article. Articles that do not meet the criteria will be returned to the authors for corrections. If the works are inadequate or do not comply with the journal's standards, they may be rejected at this preliminary stage. Otherwise, they will be forwarded to an associate editor for peer review

2. Forwarding to reviewers: The article that complies with the standards will be subjected to evaluation of merit and scientific method by at least two ad hoc reviewers from institutions other than that of its author(s).

In principle Cerâmica adopts single blind peer review. However, in line with open science practices, the journal offers authors and reviewers options to open the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. Authorization to disclose the name may be given by the authors when submitting the article and by the evaluators when filling out the Open Science Compliance Form. The publication of the evaluations that supported the decision to publish the article may be edited by the journal editorial board.

The reviewers, through an opinion written on a ScholarOne form, will recommend one of the options:

  •  Accept
  •  Minor revision
  •  Major revision
  •  Rejected

The editor(s) analyze the reviewers' opinions and forward them to the author(s). If the opinion is "Minor revision" or "Major revision," the article is returned to the author(s) for correction, modification, adaptation, and/or justification based on the reviewers’ feedback. The revised manuscript must be resubmitted to ScholarOne by the same author who submitted the original manuscript. It must be accompanied by a cover letter explaining each change requested by the reviewers. Any suggestions that are not accepted must be justified. Changes should be clearly highlighted in the text. The revised article and cover letter are initially evaluated by the editor-in-chief, who then forwards them to the associate editor, and subsequently to the reviewers.

If the article is rejected by one of the two reviewers, the associate editor will decide whether to send it for evaluation by a third reviewer. The associate editor and the editor-in-chief are responsible for the final decision regarding the acceptance or rejection of papers.

3. Upon acceptance, the article is sent to the contracted digital publisher. The final proof of the paper is sent to the corresponding author via email attachment. The author(s) have 72 hours to correct and return the duly revised original, if necessary. If the proof is not returned within 72 hours, the editor-in-chief considers the version without changes to be final, at this point no further changes to the text are permitted. All articles will be single-blind peer reviewed.

Open data

Cerâmica encourages author(s) to publish analysis datasets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, and additional materials in open online repositories such as SciELO DataZenodo, Mendeley Data, etc., if they cannot be included in the article itself. This information must be indicated in the manuscript. Consequently, when applicable, articles should indicate and reference the availability of the content underlying the research and the results obtained.

APC

There are no article publishing charges (APC) or publication fees for authors.

Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata, and Retraction

Submitting a manuscript implies that it has not been previously published or is currently in print. The article will first be evaluated for compliance with the journal's standards.

A previously published manuscript in which misconduct is identified will remain indexed in the journal's database as retracted. The retraction will document the reason and must be duly referenced through communication from the author, editor, or another authorized agent, and published in the same journal. The retraction may be partial if it applies to a specific part of the article without compromising the published research as a whole.

The procedure for registering the retraction of a paper  published by Cerâmica is initiated upon receipt of formal communication addressed to the journal editor-in-chief via email at ceramica.journal@abceram.org.br. The editor-in-chief will then inform SciELO. The communication must be accompanied by the retraction text, stating the reasons for the article's retraction.

Cases of errors or failures, regardless of their nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct, are corrected through errata. The journal will publish the errata or retractions as quickly as possible.

Any additions and modifications to the submitted text must be made only before acceptance of the manuscript and only if approved by the editor-in-chief of the journal. The editor will only consider additions and modifications to the text in exceptional circumstances after acceptance of the article. While the editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended.

If the article has already been published in an online volume, any requests approved by the editor-in-chief will result in an errata with a fee of R$ 500.00 (five hundred reais) for Brazilian corresponding authors and US$ 100.00 (one hundred American dollars ) for foreign corresponding authors (correction fee).

This policy follows the SciELO “Guide for registering, marking and publishing Errata” (in Portuguese).

Conflict of Interest Policy

The conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the article, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Adoption of similarity checking software

Cerâmica utilizes CopySpider similarity checking software.

All submitted manuscripts undergo similarity checks before being sent to the associate editor. If the similarity detected by the software is ≥ 3%, the manuscript is returned to the corresponding author along with the similarity report generated by CopySpider.adota o software de verificação de similaridade CopySpider.

Sex and Gender Equity

Cerâmica editorial team, in addition to the authors who publish in the magazine, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). Furthermore, Cerâmica observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

Authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.
