INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

The scope of the Educação & Sociedade (E&S) journal is the publication of research articles, essays, state of the art and critical book reviews based on social theory articulated with education and society. Articles submitted for publication must be unpublished in printed or electronic media, except those available in preprint repositories, and their simultaneous submission for evaluation in another journal is not allowed.


The journal publishes original articles written in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English, already revised in their original language.


Articles will not be published outside the scope of the journal, i.e themes not based on social theory articulated with education and society or that are limited to reproducing projects, research reports, chapters of theses or dissertations, and undergraduate theses. Nor works already published in national or foreign annals and journals, either in printed or digital format, in any language. Also, reports of experiences and descriptive articles will not be accepted, without the problematization and due theoretical-methodological treatment of the subject.


The publication of articles, critical reviews and other works in the E&S journal, after final approval by the Associate Editors (AE), will require contribution to editorial production, according to the guidelines presented in the CEDES page, available at: <https://www.cedes.unicamp.br/publications>.


The works will be available in full in electronic format on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) website.


E&S Journal declares that the concepts and positions emitted in the published texts are of the entire responsibility of the authors, not necessarily reflecting the opinion of its editorial board. The ethical treatment of the research to which the article refers is responsibility of the authors.


Each author may only have one article in process. An interval of 12 months will be observed between the publication of texts written by the same author and the beginning of a new submission process.


It is recommended that research data, used in articles, be made available in open access repositories, following registration standards that ensure authorship, use and data citation, as well as the corresponding article, as this contributes to the replicability of studies and increases the visibility and citation of research and journals.

It is worth noting that the guidelines listed here must be strictly followed by the authors, as their noncompliance will result in immediate rejection of the text. It will also be necessary to sign the originality agreement.

 

Articles categories

Educação & Sociedade publishes texts from research, essays, states of the art and book reviews, considering the originality of the subject, the density and the theoretical-methodological concerning the approach to the subject. If applicable, it is necessary to inform, in a footnote, the title of the original project and the funding agency.

According to the theme, the articles are published in the following sections:

Dossiers- Articles that integrate Dossiers on specific topics.
Articles - Section for the publication of texts in two categories:

  • Articles - original productions derived from theoretical and / or empirical research, starting from questions or research hypothesis (s), supported by theoretical and methodological references clearly expressed in the text, necessarily referring to social theories and respective concepts, called upon to clarify the complex relationships between Education & Society, to interpret sources or analyze research results and to draw conclusions;
  • Essays - original productions based on social theories and respective concepts, summoned to clarify the complex relations between Education & Society, presenting a thesis or proposition, arguments and counter-arguments, interpretation or analysis of data and available empirical evidence, revealing erudition, creativity and in-depth knowledge around a theme or problem, as well as the position of the author.

Review & Synthesis - State of the art or State of Knowledge. Thematic studies and theoretical problems referenced in updated data collection.
Analysis of Pedagogical Practices - Articles, based on social theories, related to studies on pedagogical practices and their effects inside and outside the classroom.
Training of Education Professionals - Productions whose scope is to reflect on the initial and continuing training processes of professionals linked to the educational field.
Debates & Polemics - Articles resulting from research or essays that problematize current and controversial themes about the relationship between education and society.
Images & Words - Section destined to the publication of works on themes related to media and education, as well as essays, comments and critical reviews of books, interviews, films and other cultural products of interest to the educational field). It is also intended to publish interviews with authors and researchers in the field who present relevant contributions to the educational field.
Special Section - Designed to publish articles resulting from research related to a theme annually defined by the editors, in view of its relevance for the study and qualified analysis based on social theory articulated with education and society.

 

Evaluation process

The editorial policy of the journal defines the following criteria for the evaluation of texts: compliance with formatting requirements, originality, thematic relevance, clarity and accuracy of the object, theoretical and methodological consistency of content, analytical accuracy, timeliness, quality of the text and adequacy to the editorial scope.

There are three phases for evaluating the submitted articles. The first is the screening held by the Coordinator and Assistant Editor, examining the adequacy of the article to the editorial line of the journal and its potential for publication; the second phase is a preliminary evaluation by the EC which aims at identifying the contribution and the quality of the article for the journal; and the third phase is a double-blind peer review. The final decision returns to the EC.

The articles considered within the scope and appropriate to the editorial criteria of the journal will be submitted to a plagiarism control process, and those qualified will be forwarded by the Editors and Associated Editors to at least two reviewers. It is their responsibility to recommend acceptance, refusal or reformulation of the works. In the latter case, the texts must return to the reviewers for final evaluation. The result of the evaluation will be forwarded to the author.

In the double-blind review,names of the reviewers are kept confidential, as well as names of the authors are omitted to the reviewers. Therefore, when submitting the article through the system, the anonymity of authorship is required.Under no circumstances, author(s) should be identified in the text. Any explicit reference of the authorship – citation of author(s) name(s), reference to articles authored or co-authored in previous works – are considered a break in anonymity.

The editorial decision of the articles will include the following procedures:

  • recommendation of the reviewers;
  • implementation of the recommended adjustments by the author(s);
  • editorial decision taken by the Editors will express acceptance; mandatory corrections; new submission for evaluation or rejection.

 

Submission of articles

Educação & Sociedadejournaloperates exclusively by the on-line Submission System(SciELO), which uses the Open Journal System as electronic management support and publication of scientific journals. Therefore, entire process of capturing and arbitration of articles is necessarily conducted by means of this electronic platform.

Each author must register in the system and submit their work for evaluation in a double-blind method (blind review) as follows:

  1. Author(s) of the article should exclude names on the text, replacing them with "Author" and year in references and notes, instead of author names, article title, etc.
  2. In Microsoft Office documents, author’s identification should be removed from the document properties (on the menu File > Properties), by clicking on File in the main menu, followed by: File > Save as > Tools (or Options in Mac) > Security Options > Remove personal information from file to save > OK > Save.

Authors can monitor all evaluation process of the article using their login and password. Registration system can be accessed from: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/es/user/register.

After registering, the users will be able to submit their work at: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/es/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions.

With the double-blind system, the names of the reviewers will remain confidential, omitting also the names of the authors. Therefore, when submitting the article in the system, authorship anonymity is indispensable. Under no circumstances can the author(s) identify themselves in the body of the text. Any explicit reference of authorship, for example: citation of the name of the author(s) of the article, reference to articles in authorship or coauthorship in previous works and electronic markups, is considered a breach of anonymity.

In the case of several authors, at the end of the articles, it's necessary to indicate which author (s) contributed in each activity applied to the work submitted: Problematization and Conceptualization; Methodology; Analyse; Writing.

In order to ensure the maintenance of the double-blind evaluation system, authors and collaborators must identify themselves as Author 1, Collaborator 1, etc.
All the identification data of the authors must be inserted directly in the appropriate fields of the article and author(s) registration page in the article submission system (metadata), including the full name of the author(s), ORCID and e-mail, with a brief description of the resume (mini-resume of up to three lines containing the last title, institutional affiliation and some research group). Important:
Authors must be at least stricto sensu graduate students.
It is recommended that the number of four authors do not exceed for each article.
In articles derived from research involving interviews, questionnaires, field observations, images and experimentation with human beings, it is required to inform that the ethical procedures recognized by the academic community were followed.
In the case of use of images, the indication of credits is required.

After registration, the user will be able to submit his work through the link: <http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/ccedes/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions>.
In case of research, the main author must qualify the article as such, with a footnote referring to the title of the Project and Funding Agency with the respective process number.

The completion of all METADATA, including Orcid and afiliation is a mandatory condition for the article to continue its processing.

 

Formal presentation of the original

Authors should submit the article for spelling and grammar review before submitting it to the journal. Size of the articles, including abstracts, notes, and references, should be between 35,000 (minimum volume) and 55,000 (maximum volume) characters with spaces; exceptional cases will be considered at editors’ discretion. Critical reviews should not exceed 10,000 characters with spaces and the articles submitted to the Review and Synthesis section which, due to the specificity of the content, may contain up to 60,000 characters with spaces. Articles should be submitted in .DOC or .DOCX (Word for Windows) extensions, sheet must have A4 format, containing the following characteristics:

  • Title and subtitle of the article: Times New Roman 16 font, centralized, bold, with a maximum of 12 words, representing the content of the article. Title and subtitle must also be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish (or French, if the article is in this language) and must be in bold italics.
  • Internal titles and subtitles: font Times New Roman 14, respectively, in bold, and centralized.
  • Abstract and keywords: the abstract must not exceed 800 characters (considering the spaces), with a maximum of five keywords that make it possible to identify the content of the article, separated by periods, except for resenhas and interviews. The texts should use Times New Roman 12 font, no indent. Abstract and keywords must also be presented in Portuguese, English and Spanish (the Spanish version may be replaced by the French version in cases where the article was originally written in that language).
  • Text:font Times New Roman 12, paragraphs without indent, spacing between lines of 1.15 and 6 pt before and after paragraphs, margin of 3 cm.
  • Tables and graphs: must be in the body of the text, presented in accordance with the norms of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). They must be identified with their title (obligatory) and caption (if applicable). Tables must always be in editable format and never in image.

  • Images, figures and photographs: must be inserted at the end of the article file itself, with minimum resolution of 300 DPI, minimum width of 1,200 pixels, JPG, PNG, PDF or EPS format. The images, pictures and photographs will be published with a maximum width of 100 mm.
  • Example:

  • Notes: if present, they should be numbered sequentially and placed at the end of text and before the references (endnotes). The use of bibliographic notes is not allowed. Instead, citations should be used in the text according to NBR 10.520/2002 from Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). References in the text should be cited indicating the name(s) of the author(s), year of publication, and page number(s): (NUNES, 1995, p. 225). In case of more than one author, the names should be separated with a semicolon (NUNES; FERREIRA, 2001, p.12).
  • References:must follow the NBR-6023/2002 from ABNT, and must be ordered alphabetically by the surname of the first author. In the references of up to three authors, all author names may be mentioned, separated by semicolons. However, in those with more than three authors, only the first author name should be mentioned followed by et al. The accuracy of the references in the listing and the correct citation of their content in the paper are the responsibility of the author(s).

    Requirements for sending the manuscript

    When submitting a manuscript, it must be stated that:

  • The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not being evaluated for publication by another journal.

  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, Open Office or RTF format.

  • URLs for references were provided when possible.

  • The text was written following the norms, style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the Instructions to Authors, which are on the About the Journal page.

  • The metadata for the article, including information for all authors, with a mini curriculum, is filled in.

  • All authors are aware that in case of approval for publication there is a need for contribution to editorial production, according to guidelines presented on the CEDES page, available at: <https://www.cedes.unicamp.br/publicacoes>.

    Guidelines for submitting proposals of thematic dossiers

    E&S also publishes thematic dossiers, according to the scope of the journal. These can be designed from proposals or calls from the editors of the journal or from proposals from the academic community, national and international.
    The dossier proposals submitted by the academic community will be examined by the Editors and Associated Editors of the Educação & Sociedade, who will be in charge of deciding on their approval. Priority will be given to proposals that present relevant and emerging themes, addressing the relationship between education and society. The proposals should be sent to the e-mail: revistas.cedes@linceu.com.br

    These are minimum requirements for the submission of proposals for thematic dossiers:

    1. Title and summary of the proposed dossier.
    2. Name and curriculum summary of the dossier’s organizer. A maximum of two organizers will be allowed per dossier.
    3. Problematization of the subject and its justification.
    4. Structure of the dossier, with a maximum of 10 articles; list of articles that will compose the dossier, containing titles and expanded summaries of each of them (maximum of two pages each).
    5. List of articles that will compose the dossier, containing titles and expanded abstracts of each of them (maximum two pages each).
    6. Name and curriculum of the collaborators on the dossier.
    7. Organizer shall request the contribution of national and international experts. The dossier must have at least two international articles.
    8. Dossier articles must be original, that is, should not have been published in any other media, whether printed, digital or others, or be under evaluation by another journal.
    9. The deadline for examination of a proposed dossier by the EB is three months (maximum). At the end of the evaluation process, the organizer will receive an e-mail containing the outcome.
    10. If the proposal is approved, the organizer will have to ask all authors of the articles that compose the dossier to register and submit their articles for evaluation in the online SciELO system (see guidelines for submission of papers), following the dates agreed between organizer and EB.
    11. If there is any change in the initial proposal or noncompliance with the deadlines, without consultation and consent of the Editors, the dossier proposal will be automatically deleted.
    12. Approval of the dossier does not mean automatic approval of the articles contained therein. Each article will be evaluated separately, and changes or exclusions may be suggested at the end of the evaluation process. The organizer is responsible for replacing an article, within the deadlines agreed with the EB. Replacement will only occur with EB’s approval.
    13. Only those dossiers that have a minimum of six articles with favorable opinions will be published.
    14. It is organizer’s responsibility to monitor the editorial production of the dossier during all stages, acting, whenever requested, as an intermediary between publishers and authors of articles.
    15. The organizer may be author of one article of the dossier.
    16. The omitted cases will be reviewed by the E&S journal Editors.
