About the journal

Basic information

Launched in March 2003, Trabalho, Educação e Saúde (TES) is the open access scientific journal edited by the Escola Politécnica de Saúde Joaquim Venâncio, of the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. It is intended to publish debates, analyzes and investigations, of a theoretical or applied nature, on themes related to the fields of education and health, discussing them from the perspective of the organization of contemporary work, from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective.

Professional training and qualification and the work process in health are central themes to the journal, which, in this way, believes to contribute to the improvement of social policies, in general, and of the Sistema Único de Saúde (Unified Health System – SUS), in particular.

Since January 2018, TES has stopped publishing its printed version and has exclusively adopted the digital version in a continuous publication stream. In 2021, it started to use the Open Journal Systems (OJS) system for managing submissions.

Certain of contributing to the consolidation of its central and unique theme – education and health from the perspective of work –, TES seeks to reach researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, professionals linked to health services, and professors and managers in the field of professional health education.

Divulgation

TES has a profile on the main social networks for the dissemination of its content and interaction with readers, researchers and authors.

Continuous Publishing

In order to speed up the research communication process, in 2018, TES chose to discontinue the classic form of publication by periodicity and sequential pagination of articles within an edition and adopted continuous publication. Thus, after passing the peer review process and completing the editorial production, the article is published.

Open Access Policy

In line with open science practices, TES adopts open and free access to its content, in the belief that it contributes to the democratization of knowledge.

As long as the right to first publication in TES is preserved, the journal allows the publication of the final version of articles and research data in personal self-archiving systems, institutional repositories, specific repositories of a discipline and generalist repositories, when there are no specific repositories of a subject.

When opting for the data deposit of their article, the author must inform in the chosen repository the access link to the related work. Likewise, you must inform in the article the link to access the deposited data.

TES has instituted a number of procedures in line with Open Science. At the moment, open peer review is under discussion and we expect to implement some initiative throughout 2023.

Ethics in publication

The editorial process of TES is guided by the norms and recommendations of ethical standards and responsibility in scientific communication, established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and by the principles of ethics in publication, established in the “Core Practices” and “Flowcharts” of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Next, we highlight some of the main responsibilities of the professionals involved in the publication.

AUTHORS

  • Authors undertake to be aware of the full content of the instructions to TES authors.
  • When submitting an article, authors must ensure that it is unpublished and that it is not submitted simultaneously for publication in another journal. It is worth mentioning that TES accepts manuscripts published in recognized preprint repositories.
  • In case there is a previous publication that presents similar content or that overlaps with that of the submitted article, the authors must inform the editors, at the time of submission, and provide a copy of the similar or overlapping material, for an editorial decision.
  • Regarding authorship, TES follows the ICMJE Recommendations. The criteria for authorship are the  following, which must be fulfilled by all those designated as authors: (1) substantial contributions to the conception or design of the study; or the acquisition, analysis or interpretation of study data; (2) preparation of preliminary versions of the article or critical review of important intellectual content; (3) final approval of the version to be published; (4) agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work, in order to ensure that issues related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are properly investigated and resolved. Professionals who do not meet the four requirements, although they have contributed in other ways to the article, should be mentioned in the acknowledgments, but not identified as authors. Authors are responsible for recognizing and obtaining written permission from all those mentioned in the acknowledgments section.
  • The corresponding author, who assumes responsibility for communicating with the journal during article submission, peer review and the publication process, must ensure that all authors have reviewed the final version of the manuscript and agreed with its submission to TES.
  • Authors are the ones responsible for maintaining an adequate record of study data and providing access to such data, when required by the editors. TES encourages the deposit of data sets in a thematic repository or, when none exists, in generalist or institutional, in order to favor sharing with other researchers, as recommended by the ICMJE.
  • Authors should confirm that all sources cited are accurate and complete. When there is doubt in the inclusion of citations and their references, the document cited is checked or requested.
  • If, during the evaluation process, editors or referees detect excessive self-citation by authors and/or the journal, the corresponding author, or even all authors, is contacted for clarification in order to support decision making.
  • Any form of scientific misconduct, such as the fabrication of data, the falsification of data, the misappropriation of data and materials and plagiarism, is not acceptable and constitutes a reason for refusing the manuscript at any stage of the editorial process, in which case the editor will initiate the appropriate procedures detailed by COPE. If scientific misconduct is detected after publication, TES will proceed with the withdrawal of the article in accordance with COPE's "withdrawal guidelines".
  • The author, or the first author of a scientific article, should make sure about the veracity of the data produced by third parties, including collaborators of a co-authored article, avoiding acting with indifference to the risk that the material is false, fabricated, or plagiarized, which may constitute negligent misconduct.
  • Authors should attach, at the time of submission, if needed, the study approval protocol by the Research Ethics Committee with humans or animals. If applicable, they must also report on obtaining the participants' free and informed consent.
  • As it involves public trust in the scientific process and the credibility of published articles, authors must declare whether there are conflicts of interest that may influence the development of the study or its conduct. The declaration must be in the body of the article, right after the references.
  • In case of authors identifying any type of error in the article, at any stage of the editorial process, or even after its publication, they should contact the editorial team. In such situations, it is expected that they will cooperate with the editors for a possible publication of an errata, expression of concern or retraction of the article.

REVIEWERS

COPE has produced guidelines that establish the basic principles and standards to which all reviewers must adhere and which we reproduce here. We recommend reading the full document at https://publicationethics.org/files/Peer%20review%20guidelines.pdf. Thus, during the peer review process, reviewers should:

  • agree only to review manuscripts whose object is in their domain, so that they can carry out an adequate and timely evaluation.
  • not using information obtained during the peer review process for your benefit or that of another person or organization, or to harm or discredit third parties.
  • respect the confidentiality of the peer review and do not reveal any details of a manuscript or its review, during or after the peer review process, in addition to those that are disclosed by the journal. One should also understand that plagiarism during the review process is considered misconduct.
  • declare all potential conflicts of interest, seeking advice from the journal if you are unsure whether something constitutes a relevant interest. If such conflicts are likely to influence the assessment, reviewers should decline the invitation.
  • do not allow your revisions to be influenced by the origins of a manuscript, by nationality, religious or political beliefs, gender or other characteristics of the authors, or by commercial considerations;
  • alert editors of any suspicion of similarity to another article.
  • be objective and constructive in their reviews, refrain from being hostile and making slanderous or disparaging personal comments.

EDITORS

  • TES publishers are committed to acting in line with the best editorial practices and to supporting initiatives to avoid scientific misconduct and encourage ethics in publication.

They must, still:

  • ensure that all articles considered for publication, in addition to being relevant, original and qualified, comply with ethical standards in research, especially in the case of research involving humans and animals.
  • treat confidentially the manuscript and all complementary material submitted, protecting the identity of reviewers and authors, since TES adopts the double-blind peer review procedure.
  • ensure that all published manuscripts have been adequately evaluated by qualified reviewers (including statistical review when necessary), not sharing with anyone, except for the authors and reviewers themselves, information about their content and status in the review process, criticism from reviewers and your final destination.
  • select competent external reviewers in the thematic areas of the articles;
  • seek reviewers who produce good quality and courteous reviews in an appropriate period of time.
  • provide clear guidance to external reviewers and request that they indicate any conflicts of interest that may exist, prior to sending the full text of the article for evaluation.
  • act ethically in all stages of the editorial process, without discriminating the origin of the manuscript, nationality, religious or political beliefs, gender or other characteristics of the authors, or if there are no commercial interests.
  • adopt a transparent editorial policy, provide clear instructions to authors, including on the stages of the editorial process and criteria for authorship, and periodically update instructions to authors.
  • follow COPE guidelines in case of suspected publication misconduct, investigate each suspicious situation and publish errata, expressions of concern and retractions, when relevant.
  • provide means for members of the journal's staff involved in the editorial process, including the editors themselves, to receive training and to stay up-to-date on the latest guidelines, recommendations and evidence on scientific publishing.
  • recognize the reviewers' contribution to the journal, publishing an acknowledgment towards them in the last issue of each year.
  • ensure the editorial autonomy of the journal in relation to its supporting institution, the Escola Politécnica de Saúde Joaquim Venâncio, a scientific unit of the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, thus avoiding academic endogeny.
  • Encourage reviewers to warn of any suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, or another form of publication misconduct.
  • Use plagiarism detection tools to avoid this form of misconduct, as well as to prevent duplicate publication.
  • Any form of scientific misconduct is not acceptable and is grounds for rejection of the manuscript at any stage of the editorial process, in which case the editor will initiate the appropriate procedures detailed by COPE.
  • Forms of misconduct are: the fabrication of data; the falsification of data, materials, equipment, or research processes, which includes the alteration or omission of data or results; the misappropriation of data and materials; plagiarism, which is the appropriation of ideas, processes, results, or large portions of text from another person without giving proper credit; negligence in certifying the veracity of data; and text recycling (also called self-plagiarism), which occurs when a significant overlap of the same text is identified between two or more articles or sections appear (usually unreferenced) in more than one of the author's own publications.
  • TES adopts the iThenticate plagiarism system for the text previously selected by scientific publishers and prepared for peer review. The text is registered in the anti-plagiarism platform of this plagiarism detection system, which automatically performs the process of searching and comparing possible sources.
  • In case of plagiarism, TES follows the COPE guidelines for submitted and published articles. According to the gradation of the result of the checking and the result of the contact maintained with the authors, the editor may request correction to the authors who omitted the credit or consider the retraction of the article, if published.
  • For the case of self-plagiarism, TES follows COPE's "Text Recycling Guidelines for Editors."
  • Each case is considered individually and depends on factors such as how much text has been recycled, where the recycling takes place, and the type of article. If it is detected in a submitted text, the text is rejected, and authors are assured of clear communication of the reason. If it is in a published article, it may be necessary to publish a correction or retraction.
  • The article being retracted will not be deleted from where it was originally published.
  • Errors or flaws that do not imply scientific misconduct may be corrected by means of an erratum.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

The journal accepts articles and review articles as spontaneous submissions.

Articles must present research results of an empirical or conceptual nature. Size between 4,000 and 7,000 words, not counting bibliographical references, figures and notes.

Review articles must present critical, systematic and methodologically consistent analyzes of the scientific literature on a priority topic for the journal. They should explain objectives, researched sources, application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Size: 4,000 to 7,000 words, not counting bibliographical references, figures and notes

Presentation of the manuscript

Submissions should be typed in Word, in Times New Roman, font size 12, and double-spaced. Articles, essays, and debates must also feature an abstract in Portuguese and English of no more than 200 words, in addition to a title in English and the title in the original language. The manuscripts can be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French. The title must be concise and representative of the content of the text. The author(s) must state whether the study is funded, if it is the outcome of a Master's dissertation or Doctoral thesis, whether it was approved by the area's Ethics Committee, and whether there are conflict of interests.

Keywords No less than three and no more than five key words describing the content of the study, presented in Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Figures There must not be more than six tables, charts, diagrams, photos, graphs and illustrations per article, except for cases that are specific to the manuscript's thematic field. In this case, the author must communicate such need to the editors in advance. All figures, except for photographs, must be numbered and have a title. Only the initials of the title must be in uppercase. References should be made using numbers (e.g. graph 3), not using expressions such as "the figure below."

Notes Notes must appear at the end of the text, they must be succinct and numbered consecutively. Notes must not be used to refer to published literature.

Emphasies Italics, underlining and bold face should not be used. Single quotation marks must only be used to attract attention to a particular item in the text. Words in languages other than Portuguese must be italicized, as must titles of mentioned works.

Quotations

For the elaboration of citations, TES follows the NBR 10520:2002 standard, of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), with slight modifications. TES adopts the Author-date system, with the authors' last names written in upper and lower case and year of publication, in the body of the article. Example: (Frigotto and Ciavatta, 2001).

Direct citations, in the body of the text, with up to three lines, must be enclosed in double quotation marks, the author's surname and, in parentheses, the year and page. Or: direct quatation, in parentheses the author's name, year and page. Single quotes indicate a quote within the quote. Examples:

If the direct citation exceeds three lines, it must be indented 4 cm from the left margin, in size 11.

O uso intensivo da microeletrônica e a crescente automação dos laboratórios, principalmente a partir da década de 1980, vem causando mudanças importantes no processo produtivo, na organização do trabalho e nas relações sociais (Deluiz, p. 99, 1995).

In indirect citations, the indication of the page(s) consulted is optional. Indirect citation occurs when the author makes a text based on the work of the consulted author. Example:

As emoções, independentes da vinculação ou não com o ambiente organizacional, influenciam no desempenho das pessoas (Frost, 2003).

If the citation has text translated by the author, it must include the term “our translation”. Example:

“Ao final de duas semanas, avalie sua experiência” (McGraw. Dean; Francis, 2009, p. 28, our translation).

In the case of citations with three authors, all must be named; more than three authors, only the surname of the first should appear in the text, as in Spink et al. (2001).

To emphasize excerpts from the quotation, highlight them with the expression “our italics” in parentheses, after the quotation call, or “author's italics”, if the highlight is already part of the consulted work. Examples:

hipótese da escassez não explica sozinha o processo de mudança de valores de uma sociedade. (Okado and Ribeiro, p. 10, author's italics).

Em termos de comportamento, a motivação pode ser conceituada como esforço e tenacidade exercidos pela pessoa para fazer algo ou alcançar algo. (Chiavenato, 1994, p. 165, our italics)

Adopt the chronological order in which the documents were published, separated by semicolons, in the case of several cited in sequence. Example: (Crespo, 2005; Costa and Ramalho, 2008; Moresi et al., 2010).

References For the elaboration of the references, Work, Education and Health is based on the ABNT standard NBR 6023:2018, with slight modifications. All cited references, including in notes, tables and figures, must make up the bibliographical references at the end of the text, in alphabetical order, without entry numbering and without space between them. In the references, a maximum of three authors with all names will be cited. In the case of more than three authors, mention only the first, followed by the expression et al. Authors' first names must be written in full in the references. Different titles by the same author published in the same year must be distinguished by adding a letter (a, b, c...) in lowercase after the date, both in the citations in the body of the text and in the list of bibliographic references. Journal titles must be written in full. The author is responsible for the accuracy and relevance of the references. For cases not exemplified, the author should consult the standard NBR 6023:2018, of ABNT. In case there is a DOI number for the document, it must be included at the end of the reference. Note the following examples:

Text review in Portuguese

The journal reserves the right to suggest changes in informal uses of language and to correct non-standard variants of Portuguese.

The authors are responsible for the professional copy editing charges, which should be performed by a professional chosen from a list of copy editors certified by the journal or another of your choice, as long as the professional follows the TES’s style manual for reviewers, available on demand. The translation to another language is optional.

Evaluation Process
The first stage of the evaluation is performed by the editors, who assess the thematic and scientific and methodological adequacy of the article, taking into consideration the editorial project of the journal; this stage can take between one and ten days. Once accepted after the first stage, the texts will be evaluated through double-blind peer review. In this stage, the editors choose at least two researchers from fields that are correlated to the topic to evaluate the manuscript (ad-hoc referees); the referees have up to 20 days to send their notes. After this deadline expires, we send them up to three reminders; and, if we still do not hear from them, we invite another referee is appointed by the journal. The opinions may recommend one of four options:

a) publication as is
b) publication only after minor alterations
c) publication only after major alterations
d) it should not be published on this journal

In case of any divergences between the referees, a third opinion is requested in order for the editorial committee to make a decision, and the deadline for this is also 20 days. Manuscripts for which “major alterations” are recommended should enclose, with the revised version, a letter with answers to every recommendation made by the referees stating how the authors incorporated the comments, with special attention to the alterations that have not been incorporated. Each referee comments should be discussed separately.

The evaluation flow with the possibilities of decision is described in the figure:

Authors can follow the manuscript review process through the online review system. The texts will be analyzed via evaluation forms and the following aspects will be considered for analysis:

Article title, abstract, text development, originality and references; methodology; consistency of conclusions or results.

Essay title, abstract, originality and relevance, text development and references; consistency of conclusions.

Uniqueness The articles submitted to Trabalho, Educação e Saúde should not have been published previously, or sent simultaneously to another scientific publication. Under no circumstance should the articles submitted to the journal be withdrawn after the evaluation process has begun.

Evaluation

The evaluation is firstly made by the editors though a preliminary analysis that should not exceed ten days. If the manuscript is accepted in the preliminary analysis, the editors appoint at least two ad-hoc referees to further evaluate it. The average time for the peer evaluation, based on vol. 19, 2021 is three months. After the manuscript has been approved, the average time until publication, also based on the year 2021, is 1.6 months.

The rejection rate of the manuscripts, based on the year 20201, was 83%.
