The poet and regius teacher Manuel Inácio da Silva Alvarenga (1749-1814), as well as other Luso-American students of his generation, acquired enlightened background at Coimbra University, at the time of the renewal of the studies in the institution, in 1772, that aimed to improve the students in order to work better for the benefit of the Portuguese Empire. Considering part of his poetique oeuvre, his trajetory and his library, the present article aims to comprehend the possibilities and the limits available for the man of letters to reinforce his condition of faithful vassal of the Portuguese monarchy.
