Abstract

SALLES, Fernanda Cimini; PORTO, Ivana Villefort de Bessa  and  ROCHA, Elisa Maria Pinto da. SHORTENING DISTANCES: THE USE OF THE DATAVIVA PLATFORM TO IDENTIFY OPPORTUNITIES FOR ECONOMIC SOPHISTICATION IN MINAS GERAIS. Rev. econ. contemp. [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.3, e172137.  Epub Feb 22, 2018. ISSN 1980-5527.  https://doi.org/10.1590/198055272137.

The State of Minas Gerais, known for its mineral resource wealthy, has presented a trajectory of concentration on low complexity products. This article presents a methodology for the identification of economic segments suitable for the sophistication of the productive structure of the state, given its current comparative advantages. To do so, the paper proposed a bottom-up strategy based on the Product Space (DataViva): starting from an analysis of the complexity of the goods exported by the state, it was possible to identify two economic segments with the potential to increase the complexity of Minas Gerais’ economy: biotechnological products and products of the mechanical-electrical industry.

Keywords : economic complexity; economic sophistication; structural change; self-discovery; Product Space.
