Temporary lacrimal oclusion with Catgut

RESUMO

Olho seco é um problema freqüente, cujo tratamento, apenas com drogas tópicas, algumas vezes não é suficiente para controle, necessitando oclusão de ponto lacrimal.

A previsão de possíveis resultados da oclusão definitiva deve ser feita através de oclusão temporária com "plugs”, apesar dos comercialmente disponíveis serem de alto custo.

A alternativa de oclusão temporária com fio Catgut 2-0 simples, auto-absorvível em 10 dias foi testada em 22 pacientes portadores de olho seco: ceratoconjuntivite - 11 pacientes (50%), Sjögren - 8 pacientes (36%) e blefarite estafilocócica - 2 pacientes (11%). Avaliação subjetiva e objetiva foi realizada, sendo encontrada melhora em 20 casos (90,9%). Em 2 casos, apesar da melhora clínica, observou-se intolerância por epífora, contra-indicando oclusão definitiva.

O Catgut constitui uma alternativa importante no controle do olho seco em países do terceiro mundo.

SUMMARY

Dry eye is often a disease in which single therapeutic with eye drops in sometimes unsucessful, leading to the alternative of punctum occlusion.

The predictability of results of definitive occlusion could be achieved by temporary punctum plugs, although high costs.

Catgut 2-0 is an option to temporary lacrimal occlusion due to its self reabsortion in 10 days.

We performed lacrimal occlusion with Catgut in 22 patients with dry eye, Sjögren syndrome (8 patients- 36%), keratoconjuntivitis sicca (11 patients-50%) and Staphylococus chronic Blepharitis (2 patients-11%) 20 patients (90,9%) presented objective and subjective improvement. In 2 cases, although clinical features have improved the occlusion was not tolerated because of severe epiphora.

The Catgut is an important alternative in dry eye control in developing countries.
