SUMMARY

Differences in the amount of leaf area eaten by caterpillars, among 12 soybean cultivates, were evaluated in Barretos, State of São Paulo. A high natural infestation of caterpillars occurred and the amount of leaf area eaten was evaluated just after it. The main species involved was Anticatesia gemmatalis Huebner, 1818 (Lepidoptetera Noctuidae). The plants were at the end of the flowering stage. A sample of 20 top leaves and 20 leaves from the middle part of the plants was utilized to evaluate the damage.
The cultivar IAS-2 had the highest percentage of leaf area eaten (top leaves 92,42% and middle leaves 88,34%) and the line D 72-9601-1 had the least (top leaves 48,38% and middle leaves 53,19%). There was no significative difference between the top and middle leaves.
