  • TRADUZIR: ESCREVER ENTRE LÍNGUAS Artigos

    Krausz, Luis S.

Abstract This article investigates to what extent the metaphysical ideas concerning language and its powers, present in the archaic Greek tradition of Homer and Hesiod as well as in the biblical book of Genesis, and discussed and reevaluated by authors such as Walter Benjamin and Bruno Schulz in the 20th. Century, can contribute for the discussion about the nature of literary translation. These ideas, whose origin is in Antiquity, are associated, on the one hand, to a vision of language as an original and autonomous dynamis, as a sense=generating power which precedes reality to become the real itself, and are thus diametrically opposed to the linguistic concepts established by Ferdinand de Saussure and Émile Benveniste, which are based on a practical approach to language, and which take the arbitrary character of words for granted. In the essentialist concept of language, typical of the archaic world, as well as in Goethe’s idea of Verwandtschaft (affinity) some valuable contributions for the praxis of literary translation might be found.
  • TRADUZIR, REMONTAR: ANTOLOGIA E A INVENÇÃO DO OBJETO TRADUZIDO Artigos

Abstract This essay aims at discussing the different meanings of the notion of translating as “remontar”, exploring the semantic field of this verb in Portuguese, whether in the sense of “montage” and “(re)montage” (in the sense of the film editing technique), or in the sense of referring to an origin. In the light of this preliminary reflection, this essay briefly discusses the relations between translation and anthology, to end up with a critical reading of the translation project of Bertolt Brecht’s poetry, published by André Vallias in 2019.
  • “PARIS ARDE”, DE IVAN GOLL: A METRÓPOLE DESENCANTADA Artigos

    Barbosa, Maria Aparecida

Abstract This article analyzes the poetry of Iwan Goll, based on the poem “Paris brennt”, which celebrates a century in 2021 and consolidates itself as a mark of modernist poetry. The investigation aims to trace an interpretation of the organic whole turning to the cell and returning to the organism. As a part of a wider project that foresees the edition of an anthology with translations of the more experimental poems and texts, the article implies a process of translation from german language to Brazilian Portuguese. There is a series of discussions implicated in this paper, which mainly concern poetic creation within the scope of modernist poetry in a more general way, poetry that is insubmissed to the rules that lead the construction of a póesie pure.

  • ALZHEIMER, DER UNAUSSPRECHLICHE DEUTSCHE Artigos

    Heidermann, Werner L.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract The article brings together various novels dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. Essentially, these are David Wagner’s Der vergessliche Riese (The Forgetful Giant) and Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s Ainda estou aqui (I am still here), one in German and one in Brazilian Portuguese. Evidence is presented that suggests a kind of parallel logic in the universe of people with Alzheimer’s disease. And attention is drawn to the multifaceted connection between forgetting and remembering. The memories are on the one hand more of a private nature (Wagner), on the other hand they are more political and historical (Paiva).

  • TRADUZINDO O PASSADO: ERINNERN ALS PROZESS DES ÜBERSETZENS AM BEISPIEL VON NOEMI JAFFES O QUE OS CEGOS ESTÃO SONHANDO Artigos

    Sartingen, Kathrin; Wais, Tatjana

  • MARIA STUART DE SCHILLER EM TRADUÇÃO DE MANUEL BANDEIRA Artigos

    Martineschen, Daniel

Abstract “Brilliant”, “beautiful”, “erudite”, “poetic”, “exquisite”, “more than poetic”, “beautifully fluid”, “superior”, “rigorous”, “most inspired” and “masterpiece”. With such terms the critics have been reading Manuel Bandeira’s 1955 translation of Friedrich Schiller’s Maria Stuart into Portuguese. The literary and theater critics have always unanimously praised Bandeira’s translation’s high quality and linguistic thoroughness as undoubtedly perfect. His translation is “faithful” to the original, carefully made and effective at the stage. However this praise seems to lack a more closed reading of Bandeira’s translation and so reveres the translator-poet and silences any finer criticism. In this text I look for causes and effects of Bandeira’s translation of Maria Stuart, examine the reception of the spectacle and the critical premises for Bandeira’s translation project in the terms of Antoine Berman.
  • EIN FAVELA-MUSICAL ÜBERSETZEN: VINICIUS DE MORAES’ ORFEU DA CONCEIÇÃO AUF DEUTSCH Artigos

    Kopf, Martina

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Vinicius de Moraes’ musical Orfeu da Conceição. Tragédia carioca em três atos (1954) can be considered both a classic of Brazilian literature and world literature. Vinicius links the Greek myth with Afro-Brazilian culture, musical pieces that became bossa nova classics, and stages a black Orpheus on a favela hill in Rio de Janeiro. The play has been picturized several times but has been hardly translated. This article would like to outline a few challenges for a translation into German. First and foremost, strategies need to be developed for conveying Afro-Brazilian culture. Firstly, the semantic field “favela” and the favela slang will be examined, secondly, the translation of the musical pieces and the semantic field “samba”. It turns out to be useful to leave terms in the original which refer to a specific Brazilian socio-cultural context, for example the diminutive neguinho/neguinha or samba instruments. Another possibility is the adaptation of a term (morro) in German (favela hill) in order to transport the socio-cultural meaning from the source language to the target language. These strategies help to emphasize a specific Brazilian or Afro-Brazilian character of the piece in translation as well. In this context, the paratext has a culture-mediating function.

  • TRADUZIR E PUBLICAR O TEATRO DE ELFRIEDE JELINEK NO BRASIL: POR QUE, O QUE E COMO? Artigos

    Bohunovsky, Ruth

Quais obras traduzir? Como traduzi-las?

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract This article presents a translation project, currently underway, which aims to translate theatre texts from de Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek. It briefly addresses to the tradition of theatre translation in Brazil, the criteria for the selection of the texts to be translated, the theoretical bias and the concept of collaborative translation. The reflections presented here deal with three guiding questions: why translate Elfriede Jelinek’s theatre in Brazil? Which works should be translated? How can they be translated?
  • O (IN)EVITÁVEL “MONSTRUOSO BICHO REPUGNANTE” (UNGEHEUERES UNGEZIEFER) NA RETRADUÇÃO DE DIE VERWANDLUNG DE KAFKA Artigos

Abstract This article discusses issues brought about by the practice of retranslating a classic work and its implications for the literary system of the target language, based on a specific case, which consists of Franz Kafka’s Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis) retranslation for the Brazilian readership, a commissioned work that I did for a Brazilian publisher in 2019. It starts with a terminological and complex question to be solved in any target language: How to translate the term Ungeziefer into Portuguese? The term, which appears in the very first lines of Kafka’s novella to define the new configuration of the metamorphosed protagonist Gregor Samsa, was translated as “insect” in the various translations of the work published in Brazil. The proposal for a new translation for the word Ungeziefer, in this context, encounters obstacles that will be discussed from the most elementary question that arises when thinking about a retranslation: Why retranslating a work already translated? And now a more targeted question for the target readership: Why translating Die Verwandlung into Brazilian Portuguese if there is already an remarkable translation, or, if we prefer, “consecrated” translation (Deane-Cox 33), from 1985, made by the Brazilian Germanist Modesto Carone (1937-2019)?
  • CARTAS DA RESISTÊNCIA: TRADUÇÃO, BIOGRAFIA E HISTÓRIA Artigos

Schäfer, Anna Carolina; Perez, Juliana Pasquarelli; Reichmann, Tinka

Abstract The German resistance to National Socialism is a topic which is not very well-known or studied in the Brazilian context and is predominantly associated with the names of individuals who acted on their own or within groups that were composed of like-minded people and confidants. The letters written between 1933 and 1945 by Helmuth James von Moltke and by several other opponents of National Socialism illustrate the biographic dimension of resistance. They reveal, in authentic texts, individual experiences that motivated each opponent to start conflict with the regime. With that in mind, the present work analyses the interface between the subjective and the historic dimension within a selection of letters and discusses the roles of the translator and the editor when transferring them into Portuguese. The translation of these letters can contribute to the dissemination, within the Brazilian context, of the topic “German resistance to National Socialism”.

Abstract This article analyses the attitude of translator and writer Alexander Lenard (1910-1972) towards his environment during his exile in Brazil. He would live self-exiled in the interior of the state of Santa Catarina, from 1951 until his death. Born in Hungary, where he is considered a great national writer, Lenard moved with his family to Austria in 1920. In Vienna, he studied medicine. Because he was of Jewish origin, Lenard fled to Italy when, in 1938, the German Reich annexed Austria. In Rome, he lived in hiding until the end of the war. Due to the conflict in Korea, which Lenard feared would turn into a new world war, Lenard moved to Brazil in 1952. He would never return to Europe. For almost twenty years, Alexander Lenard lived among German-speaking “settlers” in Santa Emma (SC), where he worked as a pharmacist and occasionally as a doctor. Lenard expressed himself mainly in German. In Brazil, he continued writing and translating, making use of his ample knowledge of foreign languages. However, despite his extended stay in Brazil, he would never express himself in Portuguese. In the 1960s, Lenard gave a series of lectures broadcast by the German Norddeutsche Rundfunk. These were published under the title Sieben Tage Babylonisch [Seven Days in Babylon] (1964). In this small volume, Lenard presents his views on seven languages: Hungarian, ‘Catarinense’, Brazilian Portuguese, Botocudo, Academic French, Roman and New Latin. In the present article, we focus on the three languages that have a bearing on Brazil and thus on Lenard’s exile. His views on these languages show how Lenard seems to have stopped any integration process, in contrast to what happened previously in Austria and Italy.

No entanto, houve exílios anteriores e posteriores.

Abstract The word exile, in the context of literature, immediately leads the imagination to the nazi period. However, there were previous and subsequent exiles. Equally, when the word is heard, the horizon of explicit political persecution arises. The question is whether there would be other causes, other circumstances to be/feel exiled? If the concept would not cross the borders of e(i)mmigration? If, for example, German-speaking immigrants in Brazil (and descendants) and their silenced literary production could not witness this way of being in the world? The project “Brazilian Literature written in German” has been striving to organize these texts and translating them into the Portuguese so that research can germinate on the subject. Hilda Siri is an example.
  • GOETHE ALÉM DO NACIONAL: CONVERSAÇÕES ENTRE LEIPZIG E BAHIA Artigos

Abstract Based on Johann Peter Eckermann’s Gespräche mit Goethe in den letzten Jahren seines Lebens 1823-1832 [Conversations with Goethe in the last years of his life 1823-1832] (Leipzig, 1836), until its publication in the Revista Americana (Bahia, 1848) under the title “Conselhos de Goethe aos homers de lettras”, we show an example of German-Brazilian cultural transfers in the mid-nineteenth century. The focus is on the first dynamics of translation and cross-cultural circulation of the Gespräche and the image of the intellectual Goethe regarded as “colossal” far beyond the national. The suportes Foreign Quarterly Review and Revue britannique played an essential mediating role as platforms for the translation, transfer, and circulation of the work. Besides the resemantization of Goethe’s ideas in each cultural context, here especially his idea of freedom, it became visible at the same time as their transculturality and the role of translations in the Brazilian cultural space, forming from early on the foreign cultural memory of Brazilian literature.
  • O DIVÃ DE GOETHE NO BRASIL: UMA DANÇA DA POESIA, HARMÔNICA NO TUMULTO Artigos

    Mazzari, Marcus V.

Abstract This essay focuses on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s broadest lyrical cycle following the publication in 2020 of its first complete translation into Portuguese, signed by Daniel Martineschen: Divã ocidento-oriental (Estação Liberdade). The poems “Blessed longing” (in “Book of the Singer”), also translated by Manuel Bandeira, and “Gingo biloba” (in “Book of Zuleica”), occupy a central position in the theoretical considerations about the procedures used by the translator. In this context, this essay also explores the tripartite typology of translation that Goethe outlined in the prose text (“Notes and essays for a better understanding of the Divan”), appended to the 12 books of poems. Finally, this essay relates the genesis of the Divan to the Goethian conception of World Literature (Weltliteratur), into which “Brazilian” songs in Tupi language were also included.
  • “E TUDO FICA MELODIA” – OBSERVAÇÕES SOBRE A VERSIFICAÇÃO DO FAUSTO DE JENNY KLABIN SEGALL Artigos

    Galle, Helmut Paul Erich

Abstract The article analyzes the translation of Goethe’s Faust by Jenny Klabin Segall regarding the verses used in the source text and in the target text. Considering the plurimetric structure of Faust and the differences between German and Portuguese prosody, the metric structure of several sections of the drama is analyzed, comparing Goethe’s and the translator’s decisions. It can be stated that the Portuguese verses are strictly oriented in the extension of the German verses, looking for metric “equivalents” whenever this was possible (in the case of ottava rima stanza and alexandrine). It is concluded that, although there are no Portuguese meters that “imitate” iambic or trochaic verses, the choice of pair verses for German iambs and impair for German trochees produces a differentiated rhythmic effect. For meters more divergent from Brazilian versification (Knittelvers, Freie Rhythmen), the translator found original solutions which draw near to the aesthetical effect of the original without transgressing the limits of Brazilian prosody.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Abstract Fictional texts which enact narrative perspective through regional specific speeches confront the literary translator with almost insuperable difficulties. The orality, constructed in the flux of unilateral dialogue and stream of conscience, is more than a problem of reproduction: the essential aspect is the perspective and the identification(s) offered to the implicit reader. In the target text this means a peculiar challenge, not only for a different language but also for a different reader, if a binary linguistic constellation is thwarted by a third language. This can be shown in the case of the hybrid linguistic situation in João Guimarães Rosa’s Meu tio o Iauaretê (1961) in comparison with its translation into German by Curt-Meyer Clason in Mein Onkel der Jaguar (1981). Our approach is guided by the category of speech of immediacy (Ágel & Hennig), taking also into account the translator’s self-reflexive process as manifest in epilogue and glossary.
